From the BBC...

quote:

During his evening programme tonight, Russian state TV presenter Dmitry Kiselyov delivered a monologue in which he posed the question:

"why do we need a world if Russia's not in it?" .....

"Russia's nuclear weapons are also delivered by the fastest strategic bombers in the world," he said

"In total, Russia's nuclear capability is the most powerful in the world," he said.

"Now Russia's entire nuclear triad has been placed on special alert. Putin warned them. Don't try to frighten Russia."

Ukraine is a breadbasket region. Using nukes there could have huge ramifications- Not to mention the Dnieper runs right out to the Black Sea- another potential environmental disaster.

Putin is in a box and he may do something desperate if cooler heads in Russia don't force him to "retire for health reasons."

There’s no chance Putin “retires.” FOX (and I’m taking everything with a huge grain of salt) just mentioned that Rubio and another congressman indicated that intelligence may suggest Putin is possibly in declining mental or physical health, which is why this whole thing is more rushed than expected. Regardless, like someone earlier mentioned, Putin (and Russia by proxy) are now isolated from the international community, probably for the rest of his rule (which I would argue is the rest of his life).

There doesn’t seem to be a way for him to save face in the eyes of the world—he’s already passed that point of no return. Which is terrifying. A coup may be the only way “out” for Russia. But with his background, is that even possible? Scary times, no doubt.

Makes no sense given the theories about Putin’s priorities in Ukraine.

His choices now are basically slugging it out street by street and bleeding his army, or leveling it. Whatever they are doing now is not working.

Any discussion of using nukes in Ukraine has to make some of the folks in the Kremlin raise an eyebrow, right?

Russia uses nukes and that's it for them. The only question is how much of the world is left after the exchange.

Nobody, including China, wants Russia to use nukes.

Well, you don't threaten nukes unless you're frightened so it must be working.

There is a reason he keeps about 30 ft from the nearest other in the room. Can't be a dictator without paranoia, but regardless, premature death ain't uncommon.

There’s been seemingly no evidence of it, our president on the otherhand...

Sorry this just seems like projection and propaganda. I don’t trust Rubio to begin with.

[BBC News] France tells its citizens to leave Russia

quote:

France has "strongly recommended" that any of its citizens currently in Russia leave "without delay".

It comes after the European Union announced that it was closing its entire airspace to Russian aircraft.

A statement on the website of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs reads: "Due to the increasing restrictions on air traffic between Russia and Europe, it is strongly recommended that French people passing through Russia (tourists, visitors, students, professionals on mission) make arrangements to leave the country without delay by existing air links."

It also advised citizens to postpone any upcoming trip to Russia.

It feels like they thought they could just march in, and the reality of them actually being there would be enough to get the majority of the country to surrender, and they wouldn’t really have to throw any punches.

They’ve been really inept so far, or they’ve just been pulling their punches. I fear it’s the latter.

I don't know. The population seems dead set on a resistance so occupation will be a nightmare if Russia invades.

I'm curious if the insurgency keeps up if the government surrenders, and how that plays out over time.

Oh, I totally agree. The only way it’s even relevant is it could sway some Russian patriots who may be on the fence of whether or not to take him out. But even if he’s fine, there’s still plenty of reason for a coup. But talk about the ultimate “if you come at the king, you best not miss.”

I remember hearing Parkinson's rumors a while ago, so this is not new.

I don't see how they could actively occupy effectively a huge country like Ukraine without spending huge amounts of lives and money fighting a prolonged insurgency, even if they sieze the whole country. For reference Ukraine is the size of Texas.

Eta:There's also the issue of language. Only 30% of Ukraine speaks Russian. It will be easy for them to categorize Russians as evil occupiers on a nationwide scale.

Eta2:30% of Ukraine speaks Russian, not 20%.
