Idk why not mimicking the US doctrine is so bad. When’s the last time we won a war again?

We win wars but we can't occupy nations that are complete cultural poles from us.

At this point it’s think our hope is continued Russian blunders while the resistance holds, for long enough that some external force (ideally, not NATO being pulled in) can impact the war before Ukraine is completely overrun.
That is more likely than a genuine Ukraine victory, of course. But Russia’s eventual success, perhaps within days, is more likely still.

The thing that concerns me the most and has me scratching my head is that Russia is only invading with 1-2% of it's active duty.
Most sources I've seen give Russia's active duty strength at 850-900k. Not all of those are army, but for the sake of argument, let's say they are. That would mean something approaching 25% are deployed in or near Ukraine. That's not sustainable by them for any significant length of time, without stripping resources from other regions where they have security concerns. And even if they take Kyiv and replace the government, the insurgency will continue. Putin is in a box and he may do something desperate if cooler heads in Russia don't force him to "retire for health reasons."

The majority of the thread has said that. We aren't analysts.
It's a no shite comment.

We steamrolled through Afghanistan and Iraq. It's nation-building that ended up kicking us in the arse. You can't make an entire people whose values and morality are vastly different from ours actually give a shite.

You are always scared. Sounds like you should go skydiving or something.

Sky News just went over the tactical nuke capabilities of the Russian army and basically said Russia has raised the spectre of tactical nukes being used within Kiev.

I know a lot of people have written off tomorrow’s talks as a military stall tactics but it’s not a bad chance to get both parties to where both can claim victory. It’s the best way out for Putin.

We won the war and occupied Afghanistan for like 20 years.
We failed at nation building a liberal democracy over those 20 years.

We invaded Afghanistan on October 7, 2001, and were into Kabul by the second week of November. Nation-building is where we failed and also something we should have stayed out of.

Any discussion of using nukes in Ukraine has to make some of the folks in the Kremlin raise an eyebrow, right?

Makes no sense given the theories about Putin’s priorities in Ukraine.

If Putin believes that Ukraine is really part of Russia. Logically, the nukes won't be aimed at Ukraine.
