British Defence Intelligence
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 4 July 2022
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
Ukrainian forces have withdrawn from Lysychansk, likely falling back to prepared defensive positions. Russia's Ministry of Defence had earlier claimed to have completed the encirclement of Lysychansk and secured full control of the city. Fighting in and around the city in Luhansk Oblast has intensified over the past week with Russian forces making steady progress.
The city was the last remaining major population centre in Luhansk Oblast under Ukrainian control. Russia's focus will now almost certainly switch to capturing Donetsk Oblast, a large portion of which remain under the control of Ukrainian forces. The fight for the Donbas has been grinding and attritional and this is highly unlikely to change in the coming weeks
slava Rusiji!

It is not that OML doesn't make the rare valid point, but it is that these valid points are just part of all the mud he throws at the wall hoping that something sticks OML must have paid close attention to the Alex Jones business model.
European reliance on Russian natural gas was certainly part of the calculation. Not having Keystone XL flowing forced some US Gulf Coast refiners importing refinery bottoms known at Mazut to blend with West Texas Light to enable the later to be refined efficiently. Valero's stated intended market at refinery expansion at Belle Chasse was Europe when it added a new hydrocracker unit several years ago. It is just that OML has zero clue about commodities, crude oil and incomplete refined products as sources for refineries thus structure a logical argument.
It is well known that Russia was behind the movement against "dirty tar sands" for over decade and after the original Keystone pipeline was built to the Phillips refinery in Wood River, IL, via Cushing, OK and its pipeline to Borger, TX from there. Both refineries were reconfigured for heavy crude oil as the main feedstock. The source being stable for a great many decades to come. It was originally funded and owned by Trans Canada and Phillips in a 50/50 split. After completed Phillips sold its half to TC.
The fly in the ointment was the Ukrainian public's willingness to fight, along a highly flawed military of Russia. Then NATO coming together, albeit in mostly word only and after seeing Ukraine's resistance.

ISW Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, July 3
Key Takeaways
Russian forces seized the remaining territory between Lysychansk and Luhansk Oblast’s administrative borders on July 3
Russian forces launched assaults northeast of Bakhmut and north of Slovyansk but did not secure new territorial gains.
Russian forces conducted extensive artillery attacks in the western part of the Southern Axis likely to disrupt Ukrainian counteroffensives.
The Kremlin continued to set conditions for potential Russian annexation of proxy republics
Ukrainian partisans reportedly derailed a Russian armored train carrying ammunition near Melitopol on July 2.
other news...
Ukrainian forces likely used US-provided HIMARS rocket artillery systems to strike a Russian ammunition depot at the Melitopol airfield on July 3. Melitopol Mayor Ivan Fedorov reported that Ukrainian forces launched two strikes on one of the four Russian depots in Melitopol.[5] Russian Telegram channel Rybar released footage of a large cloud of smoke over the city, and Russian-appointed Melitopol Governor Yevhen Balytskyi falsely claimed that Ukrainian forces aimed to strike residential buildings, but instead hit areas around the airfield.[6]
The Kremlin likely seeks to expand Russian state control over private Russian companies that support elements of Russia’s military industrial base. The Ukrainian Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) reported on July 3 that the Russian government’s inability to pay Russian firms supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine is degrading Russia’s ability to repair damaged vehicles. The GUR reported that the directors of Russian military vehicle repair centers are not accepting new Russian equipment for repair because the Russian military has not paid these centers for previous work.[7] Recently proposed Russian legislation suggests that Kremlin leadership shares GUR’s assessment. Russian legislators in the Russian State Duma submitted a bill on June 30 that would empower the Kremlin to introduce “special measures in the economic sphere” enabling the Russian government to force private Russian companies to provide supplies for Russian military operations.[8] The bill prohibits Russian businesses from refusing to fulfil Russian government procurement orders connected to Russian military operations.

Taiwan is a tough nut to crack for many decades. It has long been dug in with fortified defensive position somewhat like the underground bunker at Azov Steel, but far more widespread. The question is whether or not CCP can land enough troops to overrun it like it did overrun coalition forces at the Yalu River. That is much more difficult by sea
China's sea lift capacity is limited when it comes to amphibious operations because most of its amphibious transport require an uncontested beach or port facilities. If Taiwan destroyed its own port facilities and Taiwan is a mountainous island the landing sites are limited. Taiwan is not like northern France where there are miles and miles of beaches to choose from. I am going to go out on a limb and say that Taiwan knows which locations can be used for an amphibious invasion and has them fortified or has plans to quickly fortify them for decades now. So a ChiCom invasion of Taiwan would rely heavily on securing airfields to land transports and we all remember how Russia's assault on Hostomel Airport turned out. I am not saying that the ChiComs could not succeed but they would need their military to be much better trained and coordinated than Russia's, because using soldiers as human waves to overrun positions is much harder to do on a mountainous island than a neighboring country with a large land border.

The first daytime footage of three Ukrainian M142 HIMARS multiple rocket launchers firing at Russian targets on the #Zaporizhzhia axis.
The HIMARS have arrived. Interesting that they are being deployed to the Zaporizhzhia which has been mostly quiet. However, on the other hand. My sauce(s) in Ukraine have been saying for over a month now to watch that axis since that is where Russia is spread the thinnest and is using mostly T62s to defend.

“A [Ukrainian] military-intelligence officer says that forward units are now within sniper range (a kilometre or so) of Kherson’s outer suburbs. “The next week or two will be even more interesting,” he promises.”
Ukraine has reached Kherson. Can Russia weaken its lines in the Sievierdoentsk region to shift troops to Kherson without leaving themselves exposed to a counter attack?

The YouTube Channel Kings and Generals did a good visual recap of what happened during the month of May in the Ukraine war. War of Attrition - Russian Invasion of Ukraine
It was released yesterday so they lag a month behind in putting them together. They describe the action with map movements of the different units involved.

That's a universal story appropriate for every war, isn't it?

Many of these men are much older, they’re in their 40s and 50s, and they joined (in all likelihood) to avoid the draft. The territorials were created as local defense forces, and the men were told they would not serve on the front lines.
I dislike reducing everything to a World War Two analogy, but they’re like the British Home Army.

All of the Russian soldiers are dying on foreign soil. Where is the honor? They aren’t fighting for their homeland. They aren’t fighting for freedom.. They are fighting for a dictator
On the other hand Ukranians are fighting for their country .and for freedom out from under the Russian boot.

It is a civil war, and after eight years of killing, there’s a nastiness and hate between the east and the west.
The LHR, put out a press release a few days ago, remembering an air attack that occurred on July 2nd, 2014.
The Ukrainians hit a city street in Luhansk (if I remember the city correctly) killing a number of civilians, including a five year old boy on his birthday. They put his unopened presents in his casket.
Stories involving dead children are by nature emotionally manipulative, but you can imagine what episodes like this do to a people.
In Donetsk they have the alley of angels, with a memorial to the children killed by the punitive shelling over the last eight years.
When the DPR took their first prisoners this winter, they took a large group of them to the site, to show them what they had done.
There’s rage.
With the capture of Lisichansk, there’s a lot of video coming out. The locals who stayed are celebrating. As they say in one video the LHR released our boys are finally here.

You are so full of shite. You know that’s not true but that’s all you got. Russia recognized Ukraine's independence in 1991.
