The action zone welcomes with large writing in Russian left by Ukrainian soldiers on a shrapnel-riddled metal fence: “WELCOME TO HELL.” Scores of Uragan missile tails peeking up from the ground among ruins explain the local mood.
By late May, the fierce battle turned rather grim as Russia managed to move up fresh reserves and amplify pressure upon rather depleted Ukrainian forces.
Russia over the last few weeks generally abandoned its axis stalled near the city of Izium and concentrated on areas at the border between Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, as well as the northern bank of the Siverskiy Donets River.

We talked about this earlier. The leadership will be cadre who normally train new recruits, which will make any further mobilization very difficult. This looks like a desperation move to try to finish the war before the economy collapses or elements inside or outside the government decide they've had enough.

Starting to feel like Ukraine needs those reserves on the field soon to push back and withstand the Russian influx.

Lol, the pro Russian criowd here would tell you it’s a great plan.
It isn’t born out of desperation, but was their strategy all along.
I think Russian power is starting to break the Ukranians, but it seems to me that if they don’t totally break now; the Russians are in trouble.

Russia can achieve local numerical superiority and appear to have found some commanders that don't suck by process of elimination. They are stil scraping past the bottom of the barrel for men and material. Ukraine appears willing to trade space for time and still has some fairly large reserves they haven't committed yet. It's a gamble that Russia won't break through before Ukraine is ready. They could commit those reserves and stop the Russian offensive but that would result in a protracted stalemate. Ukraine wants to counterattack and retake the lost territory. That means the forces currently engaged will have to hang on.
My assessment of the situation.

We shall see. Holding on believing this until it comes to fruition.

So Stalin tactics at war are back in play, interesting. How many millions are willing to die this round?
Will that many children volunteer to die? How long will the “Modern Mother Russia” put up with watching dead children come home in boxes. I guess we will find out.

The rockets we’re sending will have a maximum range of 45 miles.
They’ll outrange the BM-27s the Ukrainians have, but not the Ukrainian BM-30s.

Which system are we sending and what is your source?
The Smerch has a range of 56 miles. The M270 does not reach that far UNLESS it has ATACMS or PSMs which like the M142 has a range of over 100 miles to over 200 miles depending on the munitions used. Everything I have seen discussed has been the M142 HIMARS system.

The Ukrainians are just better soldiers plain and simple. They are clearly outnumbered and outgunned and have ground down the supposed 2nd best military on earth to where they are breaking out the antiques out of storage and training people off the street who obviously aren’t smart at all in the first place and only giving them 30 days of training before sending them off to be cannon fodder. They should just skip the training all they are good for are to fill coffins with. The Russians still stuck on their Stalinist WW2 tactics. Russian soldiers are not allowed to think for themselves. Russia is and has always been a paper tiger. They look big but behind the curtain everything is rusting and just shite. If the Russian people weren’t robots that believe everything the government tells them they should revolt and overthrow Putin.

Good thread on this weeks change in the war and potential strategy for Ukraine. Much of this has been discussed ITT already.
TLDR:
Russia has learned from its past mistakes to some degree and focused on what’s ahead of them and at least somewhat improved logistics which has lead to this weeks gains.
Ukraine is faced with a decision to abandon Severodonesk and preserve those troops for the future battles or stay and grind.
Ukraine still has the prospect of 700k reinforcements that Russia does not and need to continue to receive or improve western support.
We still have a long way to go and we’re watching the ebb and flow of real and traditional warfare in real time really for the first time in most of our lives as it’s being fought.
