Yeah Wilson is like a Lake, just dams at both ends and 12 miles from dam to dam I think. Pickwick and parts of Wheeler are more 'Riverish' and much longer between dams. Robert Trent Jones is also on Wilson.

Oh, Wilson and Pickwick would be top choices if money were no object. The fishing on both is superb. The proximity to Florence, AL is a HUGE plus as it is my favorite small town in Alabama. Hunting there isn't as good as it is down south, but there is still a bunch of it. The problem is the cost.

I would check into Weiss Lake. It isn't far from the interstate and is close enough to the Walmarks.

The bluffs at Weiss Lake

Also, Chestnut Bay Resort is nearby. It has rental housing and tons of things to do for extended family.

Honestly, I would suggest checking into buying in Chestnut Bay. We always booked House #5 and loved it.

I wouldn't consider Wilson as a river and you have Shoals Creek that feeds into it that has some very nice property on the water. My aunt and SIL both live on Shoals Creek and it is very nice waterfront.

Yeah, as soon as I posted I realized I had forgotten about Wilson and Wheeler Lakes. I'm not at all familiar with either one of them.

Weiss Lake is great for fishing, but recreationally, it's poor. Damn thing has an average depth of 6ft and is one big flooded cotton field. There are more lower units on the bottom of that lake than all the other lakes in Alabama combined. Centre and Cedar Bluff leave a lot to be desired for amenities. You know you're in bad shape when Gadsden, AL is your fine dining options.

I will say that Yellow Creek in the summer is a nice place to be. Bikinis in the water fall coming off the mountain is a sight to behold.

Smith Lake is the only answer, it's the most pristine, fishing isn't the best, but it's also only about 45 min from Bham.

Lake Guntersville is beautiful. I had no idea that terrain like that existed in Alabama until I stayed there for a wedding.

Also Logan Martin and Lay Lake just outside of Birmingham. Neely Henry outside of Gadsden and Weiss as has been mentioned short distance from Rome. Also Wedowee is one to look at, but may be getting too far south for you like Lake Martin.

Hard to beat Guntersville, Wheeler and Pickwick in North AL. Also may look at Chickamauga outside of Chattanooga.

Yeah the prices aren't cheap. I moved to Wilson in 01, you couldn't touch property there now for what the prices were then.

Smith Lake should be on your radar as well.

Our HS team stays there for tournaments on Neely Henry and Weiss. I couldn't believe a place like that existed

Guntersville is beautiful, but lots of money from Huntsville relocates out there as they get to retirement, want a second property, or just feel they can deal with the insane commute to have a house by the lake.

Lake Martin is going to be the wealthiest area and most expensive by far. Lot's of 5 million or higher homes there for Atlanta and Birmingham executives to vacation. Great lake though.

Guntersville is outstanding bass fishing and very pretty with mountainous terrain coming up off the lake. More affordable than Lake Martin but still expensive. Fairly rural setting.

Wilson Lake in Muscle shoals is mostly large, open, big water. Great if you love a view more like the beach without a lot of shoreline. Not the best fishing either. It's more like a huge, wide, Tennessee River. The Shoals area is outstanding though. Great area to live and retire. Lake houses can be fairly expensive there since you can live there and work in the city. It's not really vacation homes. The Shoals has a lot of Tennessee fans if that helps with your hatred of Bama.

Guntersville is great, you can make a trip to Chatanooga etc. If you fish a lot it would be my rec. Water is clearer, deeper etc at Lake Martin, Smith, and Tuscaloosa an no milfoil.. That can be a problem in Guntersville if you like to swim.Plenty of deep water to swim but in areas like Honeycomb most cant jump off their doc. Wouldnt be a problem on main channel.

I would look into Tim's Ford in Tennessee as well.

Ya, I'll agree there. There are a few "beaches" that are kept free of it, but it's definitely a plague on the lake.

But if you love fishing, you're in about the best spot there is in that part of the country.
