Thinking hard about buying a lake house in about 7 years when my own house is paid for and I start winding down at work. Would like a lake house that I can eventually make my full time residence. Son lives in Ohio so would mean having a way station on the way up.

Tell me about the areas around Huntsville.... Guntersville, Muscle Shoals, etc. Looks purty up there. Bama fans are a negative.

Lake Martin looks okay, but too far south for my needs. And last time I was there I saw quite a few confederate battle flags.

Great location, but it won't be cheap. The closer you get to Huntsville, the more expensive it will be.

Lots of "frick you" money in Huntsvegas now, and most of the lakefront property around Lake Guntersville has been eaten up.

As far as North Alabama, Guntersville is the only place I know of with any sort of town around it. It’s a really nice area also as it is nearby a lot of other stuff like mountains, Huntsville, ATL, the interstate, etc.

If you don’t mind being in BFE, Lake Smith is your go to.

I have lived on Wilson Lake in Muscle Shoals and Shoals Creek in Lauderdale County/Florence (Both are part of the TN River system). I Preferred the Shoals side. I do miss it. But the country ain't too bad either.

Killen/ Florence area has some nice property on Wheeler or Wilson lake. Hour from Huntsville but Florence has plenty of shops.

It'll cost though.

Smith Lake is my favorite larger lake in the state. It's pretty rural though in most parts of it. Some parts are pretty close to Jasper. 2 friends have houses on Smith, and both are about a 45 minute drive to the closest decent grocery store.

I love the Muscle Shoals area, but technically you'd be on the river there. Not sure what housing opportunities are like on the river there.

Then go to Lake Martin near Alexander City.
Probably a higher percentage of Barners there

Take a look at Weiss Lake as well. It's a little south of Guntersville.

Might be a bit cheaper and Rome, GA is about 30 minutes away if you need a "city" for any particular reason. Weiss would also give you the option of access to I-59 or I-75 for trips to Ohio.

Opened the thread to suggest Lake Martin. I'd say you're kind of right though. Once you're out of sight of the lake, you get into meth country real quick. Not the case around the entire lake though.

The wife and I took the kids out there for the first weekend in April just to get them out of the house.

Guntersville is gonna be where you want to go. Like someone mentioned, it can be very pricy.

Logan-Martin is another option that is further north than Lake Martin. I don't think it is quite as big but it has some nice areas on it. Not as expensive as the northern parts of the state, but not as much to do off of the water. 20-30 min drive east from bham on I20.

I lived out towards Ford City in Wilson Lake Shores and loved it. Just a short drive across the bridge to Florence.

I wouldn't consider Wilson as a river and you have Shoals Creek that feeds into it that has some very nice property on the water. My aunt and SIL both live on Shoals Creek and it is very nice waterfront.

It isn't cheap, last time I looked ~15 years ago was about 70k-100k for a lot.

What is the purpose of the lake house? Swimming/skiing/socializing? Hunting/fishing?

The recreation lakes are Lake Martin and Smith Lake. They are both deep, clear lakes. Smith Lake being relatively close to Tuscaloosa. Lake Martin being very close to Auburn. You can add Lake Tuscaloosa to this list too, but it is much smaller than the other two lakes.

Hunting and fishing lakes abound. I'd start looking for one of these based off what else I wanted around it. Golf? Dining? Night life?

The TN River lakes are expensive. No other way to describe it. Lots on Gunterville, Pickwick, and Wilson are going to be 3x what they are on a Coosa lake or Smith lake. I haven't looked much at Wheeler to see what the prices are there. I assume they are more reasonable because they draw that lake down in the winter.

I've been in a bass club for over 15 years. In that time, I've been on just about every lake in the state. I hope to downsize my house soon and start looking for a place of my own. Mine will be a compromise with the wife between what she wants and I want. If it were up to me, I'd be in Demopolis on the river for hunting/fishing. She needs something a little cleaner, nicer, and close to amenities.
