Staffing agencies are employment agencies that have contracts or deals with many or a few local businesses to find ‘talent’ to fill their employment needs.
Say company X needs an accountant, and you just so happen to be an accountant. Company X may not advertise the position on indeed, Monster, etc but instead just contact a staffing agency to find someone to fill the role. Staffing agency will then place the position on their website and screen several different candidates in their database for the position. I’ve had very good luck with them.
Going back to school is also not a bad option. I got tired of the lack of security. Saw the direction my industry was heading (solar) and got out before it was too late. Took my savings and the rest of my GI bill and am working on a second bachelors.

I was a sports writer before moving up to a sports editor position for a mid-market paper in Texas.
Not trying to stay in journalism though. It was fun for the four years I was in it, but I’m trying to do anything else at this point.

I got the dreaded axe last year, not a manager, but in a supervisory role.
the losing your job sucks no matter when it happens, but right before the holidays is just cruel.
I'm lucky that I was able to find employment 2 months later, but I will say that I wish I would have relaxed during my time off.
I was frantic in my job search and was a pain in the arse to the wife during that time, mainly due to stress amd just not relaxing.
take some time to yourself and relax. live a little. take a vacation.
it's hard to fathom, but shite gets better.

I have a journalism degree. Did that for four years after graduation and got laid off in June.
Not the greatest degree, I know that, but I love sports and thought I’d regret it if I didn’t at least try. The business is just dying and so I don’t really see an ‘in’ anymore. I had an interview at the Dallas Morning News a few months ago and never heard back.
That kind of closed the door for me lol.

Happened to me last summer. Just update your resume and start sending it out. With 5 years experience you will get bites eventually. Good luck.

Same thing happened to me 18 years ago. One week after Christmas. Also it was the same day my wife told me she was pregnant.

From my experience, a company is much more inclined to hire a local candidate than one that needs to relocate. Obviously this isn’t the case 100% of the time but just wanted to say that picking up and moving isn’t as easy as “I’ll see you Monday”.
