Lafayette TV stations KATC and KADN will announce on Tuesday morning a plan to merge their newscasts and rebrands their operations.
The stations, now owned by Gray Media, will be rebranded as “Acadiana News First” and include a resources and talents of the two stations along with KLAF to offer a unified identity on all three channels, said Jim Parker, director of news for the Gray station group in Lafayette.
The new format, which will include the evening newscasts aired on each channel at 5, 6 and 10 p.m., will start Sept. 21.
“So excited, can't wait for the launch of Acadiana News First,” Parker said. “(It) will be the preeminent source for local news and information in our community, backed by the most experienced broadcast news team in the market."

I never realized growing up how uncommon it was to have two channels for each network. We had Lafayette and Baton Rouge affiliates for ABC and CBS. We had an Alexandria affiliate for NBC (and then later Baton Rouge as well).

So all the people that left KATC and went to KADN are going back. KATC need coverage sucks. Nothing will change with the merger. KLFY is the real winner here. Everyone will be watching them.

So I live in the Lafayette market, and growing up we had a Lafayette and Baton Rouge ABC, CBS, and NBC. In fact the Baton Rouge CBS always had their episode of The Price is Right a day behind the Lafayette one and an hour later. So when I was off from school I would watch the brand new episode on the Lafayette station at 10 am, then the previous day's rerun episode on the Baton Rouge station at 11

Have you seen most of the retards on KATC in the morning ? They look like a 5th grade class that got together to do a skit on news casting

That’s with any small market, but I’ve noticed this as well

I didn't see Darla listed as the new evening news anchor. I wonder if she is staying? She's great. Interesting Jim Hummel is going back after what happened. He called out then mayor Josh Guillory, and basically got canned by KATC. I guess it's all new leadership at the company.

In other news, Caroline Marcello is coming back after doing a stint on radio at 107.9. She was really good on the morning show before she left.

If they could manage to poach sports guy George Faust, weatherman Adam Olivier, Lydia Alcala, and Layne Miller from KLFY, they'd be all set.

ETA: Jim Hummel needs to grow a beard.

No disrespect at Will Herren at all. Just building a dream team.

Kraski Melvin is great too. Took me a while to get his sense of humor but he's funny.

I stopped watching KATC after the switched to the crap they do now. It’s a lazy half arse way they report on the news.

So does this mean KATC will now go to the same format KADN switched to where they no long have a morning news show?

If so KLFY will be the only morning news option.

Sidenote: All of my friends give me shite for being the only person they know that still watches the morning news like an old man, I'm 39.

Radio has been doing this sort of thing for years. Find a station and odds are it's owned or at least run by a company owning/running at least one other station in the market.

As the technology grows, it makes things much less local. While it allows for faster news service, it also shits all over quality derived from competition.

I used to love how in CENLA (especially at night) you could catch pretty much every radio station from north La down to just about New Orleans. 101.9 Monroe’s home for R&B thank you for your service.

I'm guessing she retires for the 2nd time after 35 yrs in the business. Darla walked away 2 years ago and was coerced out of retirement to join KADN. She's in her early 60's and doesn't need the money. She's been a part of broadcasting on each of the Lafayette stations: KLFY, KATC, KADN.

The Byron Allen Media group really fricked up programming at KADN/FOX several years ago. KATC Ch. 3 also shite in the bed with Scripps and glad to see the new ownership. FWIW, Gray Media now owns TV stations in every Louisiana TV market ... NOLA (WVUE), BR (WAFB), Alex (KALB), LC (KPLC), Monroe (KNOE), S'port (KSLA).

I switched to KLFY when KATC changed its format using inexperienced reporters who looked like they were still in Jr. High School. It was brutal to watch.
