Well yeah, but let's not pretend there's not a romanticism applied by some to the word and that period

Of course there is, and it’s intellectually dishonest to not acknowledge the context associated with that word in southern America. And I’m not saying anybody should be ashamed of romanticizing that period—they had some cool arse architecture and dress—hell, I romanticize that period for those reasons. And I’m also certainly not saying that anybody but the tiniest little insignificant group of the most ignorant racist rednecks actually romanticize it because of slavery. For all I know, that number might actually be zero.

But if the band has had genuine conversations—and it seems they have—with people who, if not outright offended, are at least uncomfortable with that word being a part of the band’s name, and the band is not that attached to it since they already are referred to as Lady A, why not just drop the word? It doesn’t seem like there was a huge outrage and demand for them to do so—if there was any call for them to do it at all—so it’s not like they are bending over and disingenuously kowtowing to save their careers.

And they aren’t claiming this is going to end racism, so y’all can do away with that straw man. It’s just a simple gesture saying they acknowledge the pain a lot of the country is in, and it’s one little thing they can do to maybe help, to maybe grow and be more aware of other people’s feelings, even when their intentions were never malevolent. What’s wrong with that?

My high school’s mascot was Rebels, and the Confederate flag was a very prevalent part of the pageantry of our football games, pep rallies, t-shirts, etc...I think the name came from when we broke away from a bigger, oppressive school—that was the story we were told, anyway. And I naively rocked that flag without any thought of the Civil War, slavery, or the potential feelings of any of my black teammates or fellow students. To me, it ONLY symbolized school pride.

So proud was I to be a Rebel, I had a huge Confederate flag hanging on my wall above my bed. And we had a black housekeeper/babysitter. It literally never occurred to me that she might have walked in my room every day with that symbol staring her in the face and felt a certain way. But after taking American History (from a Super conservative teacher who was in no way a Confederate apologist) my Junior year and learning a little bit, I took it down. She may not have given 1 single frick—may not have ever thought about it—but the tiny bit I “gained” from hanging it wasn’t worth any potential negative feelings it may have stirred in her. A small gesture to be sure, but small gestures matter. And enough of them can make a significant difference.

So wait, agree changed her name bc of racism but all she did was shorten it to the initial that stands for the racist word still?

I remember when actual racism was determined by the intent of what was said or represented.

Not some unintended, completely innocent, convoluted, six steps removed connection that can be pieced together to point back to something and scream "RACIST!!". It really is insanity.

How many people would even fricking know any of this if not for that detailed explanation? But I guess that now a style of home is racist. You baws down South better find a new way to describe your plantation-style homes

Okay, so what does the A stand for now, because unless you tell us, it's still Antebellum to most. And two, most BLM don't know who the frick you are and don't care.

That state was part of the confederacy and was pro-slavery. They should change their name. Anything associated with the south from any point in our history represents slavery and as such should be wiped from our country.

Or pretending that it makes a difference if you don't pronounce the terminal -R sound. shite, George Wallace never finished a word with an -R sound in his whole life.

The only people who would possibly be offended by the word Antebellum just had to google who this band actually is.

This whole people being scared or unsafe is being taught. The memes of little black kids upset is such bullshite.

You are basically teaching your children to hate. It's no diff than if a white person grows up being taught to hate and be afraid of black people.
