Camping is often called America’s favorite outdoor activity. This summer, when many travel options have been eliminated, the go-to vacation has been camping or renting an RV and visiting public lands.

But camping and national parks have a complicated past when it comes to racial equality and equal access for all. National parks have a history ofsegregation that dates to the 1930s, something that didn’t change until the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

quote:

The years of segregation, racism and displacement continue to define national parks and other public lands as predominantly white spaces.

A 2018 study by the Society of American Foresters found that between 2010 and 2014, 94.6% of visitors to national forests identified as white. People who identified as Latino made up 5.7%, and those who identified as Black made up 1.2%.

Want more diversity in camping? Start with the gear

They’re recycling a complaint from another website a couple months ago that we discussed (laughed at) here.

Journalism is awesome.

There needs to be more diversity in BET programming. I’m tired of seeing Beyoncé, Tyler Perry and Martin reruns

The accessibility of camping depends entirely on if you desire to actually camp or just live somewhere else for a few days.

Let’s put some things into perspective:

This country is 244 years old.

According to that article National parks had a segregation problem for a 34 year span that ended 56 years ago, but we should be concerned about it now because?

The American Media truly is the enemy of this country

The is no racial access issue.

Blacks can go the the park the same as they can go to a doctor

I have a black friend that will tell that he ain’t bringing his blackarse in the woods cause he’s scared of Bigfoot, bears, spiders and snakes. No particular order.

As reparations white parents should have to take black kids camping when they go. For every child they have an equal number of black kids need to be taken along.

Now camping racist Bc black people can’t afford to camp...It’ll never be enough.

But god knows we need more people like this in our most beautiful public spaces.

If a statue is torn down in the middle of the woods but nobody hears or sees it, is it still torn down?
