Every taxpayer should be against this move.
BREC should have kept up the zoo and didn't.
We don't need a 150 zoo and another property tax to pay.

Now as a kid, i used to love that zoo, and spent a few summers going to zoo camp there.
I went to zoo camp in the mid to late 80s

why are the NBR residents so against the move? AS the poster mention above, people are not stopping to eat or do anything else anywhere near the current location. There is noting but a slum surrounding the zoo in its current location. I'm not saying the fairgrounds is the right answer, but anything is better than its current location
Because its seen more as a slight against that part of town and a racial one at that (which is ridiculous). The community leaders in that side of town have let it go downhill and reinvesting in it so far hasn't worked. The Zoo wants to move to boost its revenues. If staying in NBR is what would boost its revenue more than moving south then I'm sure they would do exactly that.

If you cut all the PC bullshite, the argument boils down to this: simply on principle, they don't want to see an attraction located in the black part of town moved to the white part of town. That's all this is.
Now, Broome and her crew argue that the zoo remaining in its current locale will help spur economic development in NBR, which is the most important goal of her administration. The reality is that the zoo has been there 47 years with no economic development surrounding it whatsoever. In fact, just the opposite. Now maybe next year is the year we see the economic development in the area that's been 47 years in the making, but I have my doubts.
For BREC, they want to move the zoo because they need to justify the significant amount of tax dollars they receive. You can't continuously beg for tax dollars once the voters realize you don't actually need all the money. Building a new zoo (which is unnecessary) creates a "need" for the tax money.
The zoo is just the chess piece in a fight between the Mayor and her desire to somehow turn NBR into the Shangri-la of East Baton Rouge Parish and BREC's desire to keep sucking tax dollars. The lions, tigers, and monkeys don't give a shite where it is located. They're still stuck in cages

BR has some of the worst infrastructure issues in the country, and the concern is that the zoo is not in a nice enough part of town so you want to spend $100M on moving it.

And that's the wrong reason to oppose this, but you are right; people are making this a racial thing when in my mind it's an economic thing. We can't afford it.

Broome and co. don't are what we pay in taxes, she's just against it because her "people" are against it.

I think BREC is money grubbing, and they are power hungry. They take in enough now to have maintained and kept the current zoo up with the times; however, they didn't do it. Now they want more, more, more.

I'm hoping people don't get caught in all this us v them crap. It' should be about the economy of it all, and not race. It should be about bigger and bigger govt. and less and less control by the voters.

Some of my family just took their kids to the zoo, and found it less than desirable. Many exhibits had no animals, and its as if BREC letting the current zoo slide to reinforce their efforts to build a new one. They were disappointed in the product they found.
The Audubon Institute offered to take over the zoo a few years ago, but BREC nixed the idea. Sad...

Part of the empty exhibits/habitats is it's borderline on keeping the AZA accreditation.
Many can't be repurposed for other animals without heavy modifications and why spend money on that when your location isn't serving the community.

Can we counterpropose building a new zoo while keeping the old one "operational"
We would just make them, "Separate but Equal"

Brec one side and the north baton rudge community on the other. No one else cares.
Why is brec pushing so damn hard though? That’s what needs to be looked at. The potential contractors for a new zoo must be treating the brec board to God knows what on a daily basis.

BC the Zoo is failing at its current location but the AA's are making moving it a racial issue

It's the chicken or the egg.
Basically BREC didn't spend the necessary funds to keep thing up and to modernize. They didn't build with the times.
Now the complaint is attendance is falling. Of course BREC helped make that happen.
Now what happened to funds that should have gone to the zoo?
I guess it's part of their large cash reserves

That’s the only agenda they know. Libtards only know one way to do things. Play the race card and try to force shite on people. They know their party sucks and it’s the only thing they know how to do well. State government should not be allowed to have any say so on local issues

just close the damn thing and move the animals elsewhere, problem solved.
