Yay, more regulation!

I agree with ole Robby Carter on this one too but more for the hate of never ending laws that will accomplish nothing.

If they can afford a cell phone, then there is no excuse for not being able to afford one of those hand held stands you put on your dashboard.

I you can't afford both(again, no real excuse) then don't use your phone in the car at all. Simple/

EXACTLY.

Texting and surfing the web/social media (which is already banned) are the distractions. The physical act of holding the phone against your ear isn't the distraction. The distraction is simply not paying attention while you are talking...which doesn't go away just because you are using bluetooth.

Essentially the law says you cannot even HOLD a cell phone in your hand while driving (with a few exceptions). I get the sentiment. I really do. But this proposed law is RIPE for abuse in pretextual stops

It’s just a money grab. California had this for years. You stop at a light, a cop walks by, if you touch your phone the cop signals you over and you get a $300 ticket and a giant red flag on your driving record if you have to be insured for your work.

It’s never the a-hole weaving in lanes distracted while driving. It’s 99% checking an email at a red light. Broome is going to set up task force after task force in every St George neighborhood to fleece as much as she can.

I get where you’re coming from as far as the core sentiment, and I agree in principle with the need to minimize distractions. But the distinction between physically holding a cell phone and speaking through a Bluetooth system seems extremely arbitrary.

It’s fairly well-documented that holding a phone to your ear is only marginally more distracting than having a conversation over Bluetooth. The larger issue is that it ties up one of your hands, which means you can’t use that hand to drive. But yes - from a pure reaction time standpoint it’s not that much different.

That being said, I think this may be kind of missing the point of the proposed legislation. I think most folks agree that texting, reading TD, etc. is way worse than talking in your phone. But if there are “acceptable” and “unacceptable” reasons to use your phone in your hand while driving, it becomes impossible to enforce. The proposed law basically says if you’re using your phone in your hand while driving, it’s against the law.

It’s not really about the distinction between handheld and Bluetooth phone calls - it’s more of an attempt to draft a law against texting & driving that is actually enforceable since the law would no longer distinguish between texting, posting on TD, using Google Maps, or talking to someone on speaker. All of these actions would now fall into the same category of handheld phone usage while driving.

So how does it know if you are driving or riding?

Gotcha, that makes a lot more sense than the other poster who responded. I can see the validity if that’s the argument. Thanks

Most vehicles before 2010 did not come equipped with bluetooth capabilities. Hell, before my first iPhone in 2008, I had never bluetoothed anything.

I recently bought my mother, my GF and another co-worker $30 bluetooth car FM transmitters for their pre-2010 cars that allows their calls to use their car speakers. I could no longer deal with their more-often-than-daily "speaker-phone-while-driving" crappy calls.

I mean what do you think our police state relies upon? Actual evidence?

What’s the status of the “weed” bill? Have we heard anything?

Thanks

So you are OK with the state taking away your ability to drive and ability to use a cell phone?

Times have changed, it is a human right to be able to travel, it is a human right to be able to communicate. Just because we have improved ways to travel and communicate doesn't give the state the power to restrict those rights. They may try to take them, but that doesn't make it right.

Try being less big government authoritarian.

If they got iPhones they got headphones with a mic in the box. It says hands free, not wireless or Bluetooth.
