Wait, what? Gambling winnings are absolutely taxable (although gambling losses can be an itemized deduction). And above a certain amount of winnings, LA withholds tax at the point of payout, and is required to issue a 1099.
sure.
to be clear, big time winners and pro gamblers definitely have winnings reported directly from the casinos to the IRS or have the taxes withheld on site. i'm mostly talking about the average granny who plays $100 on the slots every weekend.

you know the bill hada fiscal note you can go read. It estimates $5 million in annual revenue.

Not every person who voted NO today is against sports gambling. They're against the bill as in it's current state with the amendments. They can't vote YES if the Louisiana casino commission is AGAINST the current form of the bill. They would lose out on all their handouts
So why did no committee member object to the amendment adding video poker to the bill, effectively killing the bill?
You can thank Dustin Miller (D-Opelousas) for adding the killer amendment, as well as all other committee members for not opposing it.

Don’t you gambling addicts have more important things to worry about?

It was a combination. The committee has a R majority, and nobody on the committee objected to the amendment.
However, every other attempt to kill sports betting and fantasy sports has been made by the backwards-thinking house republicans:
Blake Miguez
Lance Harris
Julie Emerson
Rick Edmonds
Reid Falconer
Valarie Hodges
Jerome Richard
Steve Pylant
Charles Chaney
Jack McFarland
Sherman Mack

Agreed to an extent, but there are numerous reps in the south as well who continually vote against what their constituents want. At least the North LA citizens were able to actually vote to disallow fantasy sports. We aren't even getting a chance to vote on sports betting because of all these idiots in office.

Dear House of Appropriations Committee:
As a citizen of Louisiana, I take pride being from this state.
But what I do not take pride in is the lack of progress that continues to go on in the state.
We are ranked last when it comes to the following:
Opportunity
Crimes and Corrections
Natural Environment
49th in economy.
48th in infrastructor and education.
Health Care is ranked 45th.
Excuse my language, but despite everything we do have to offer, this state is a shite hole.
While I know the tax dollars sports gambling would generate would do little to fix these problems, a little is better than nothing.
With that said, I enjoy sports gambling. I bet on football and on occasions basketball. I don’t bet more than I can afford, it’s just something I like to do. Some people like to go to a casino to play craps, blackjack and/or slots, I like sports gambling.
Of course I am not the only one in Louisiana who enjoys betting on sports. Despite the laws, there are ways to still bet, but there are certain risk involved that we wouldn’t have if it was legalized. Last year, when Mississippi legalized it, there were people making the drive to their casinos to place bets.
Every weekend, the person who drove to Mississippi would place bets for 10-12 people. This upcoming year, it will likely be more.
Louisiana borders the 2nd most populated state in the country (Texas). Since gambling is not legal in Texas, why not take advantage before they eventually legalize it?
Can someone please explain to me why Louisiana doesn’t want to legalize sports gambling?
If the same mindset continues to run this state, we will continue to fall behind.
Please consider making sports gambling legal the next time the opportunity presents itself.
Thank you,
Christopher Williams

Did not realize there were three separate bills related to sports betting. Don’t care about the sports books. Just fantasy. You guys carry on. Sorry for your loss.

Wonder what lobbyist were against this?
That would help follow the money someone was paying.

so the fantasy bill passed?

The Sports Gambling TAX bill just failed in the House 49-46. It needed 70 to pass and got 65 votes just last week. fricking idiots.
You need to pass both legalization and tax bills through the House and Senate to pass.
There's Sports Gambling Legalization Bill (Martiny) Failed earlier in Appropriations
Sports Gambling Tax Bill (Marino) Failed just now
Fantasy Sports Legalization (Talbot) Passed through Senate
Fantasy Sports Tax Bill (Abramson) Will be voted on this week.
