For a long time here in Kentucky, Kroger and the occasional Walmart or Winn Dixie was what you had available as a big box grocery. And for a long time they has better quality product that people were willing to the price for at the end of the day.

Kroger has jacked up their prices but they’ve also stopped carrying a lot of better brands to pimp their Private Selection, Simply Organic shite and their quality is suffering. I’ve started shopping elsewhere for a lot of things as a result.

And now we have Publix, Wawa, and Hyvee moving into the area so they’re going to have solid competition. It’ll be interesting to see how that unfolds.

I mean look at the Robert Reich twitter post. Should tell you everything you need to know.

As a reminder, Robert Reich knows essentially nothing with regards to real-world economics and is a pure academician for those purposes. The fact he was deliberately and obviously dishonest on this specific point is kind of a new look for him, but not wholly unexpected.

On the other hand, compared to Paul Kruger (who has a Nobel Prize in Economics), Reich is a economical genius.

WM is $2.66 for a gallon of whole. Texas. What is your Alabama price?

I'm not a fan of these giant companies consolidating.

However, Kroger can charge whatever the frick it wants for eggs and milk.

See the two lines of text you quoted. Constant consolidation bad.

However Kroger can charge whatever they want. Kroger isn't the only seller of eggs. They will price what the market will bear. Other sellers of eggs will undercut them and kroger will have to throw out rotten eggs that don't sell.

The market.

Interesting -- my local Meijer that I go to always seems like it is out of half of its stock and I have been thinking I need to go to Kroger more. I actually don't mind paying a little more if the stock is good and it keeps the riff raff out.

What products did the sell that were below inflation increase?

I can see the likeliness that they parsed out information that is detrimental. Does Kroger price some items higher in order to price some products lower in order to maintain balance in the supply chain and affordability for consumers? What is the overall price to inflation for common staples purchased by shoppers?

You can’t be bought if you’re not a publicly traded company.
HEB seems to operate at a 2% profit margin, yet has the better prices among the local stores.

It’s the opposite here. Meijer has a better selection of products/brands and a wider variety. Anytime I’m fixing Asian or Indian food I end up having to buy stuff there because Kroger won’t carry it.

That's TOTALLY unrelated. Supply and demand has ceased to be a real thing and my local AG grocery store has gotten on that SKYPE call with Krogers and Albertsons. They decided not to compete on price ever even if it means gobbling up market share.
