Correct. Also, NOLA is not like other cities. The power structures, the way things work, it is truly different. People don't understand that.
A lot of this is why Houston has far surpassed NOLA as a business location and has seen massive growth while NOLA has stagnated or declined significantly. Throw in LA politicians and it became an easy choice for lots of producers to leave NOLA. A lot of the productive population has gone to Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, and other sunbelt cities over the last couple of generations. What's left of the old line familles fight over the scraps left behind.

Yeah. They strangled off anyone trying to move up economically as you aren’t connected. Hard to do business in NOLA if you ain’t connected. They ruined the city. They don’t care, they just protected their interest and will be fine whether NOLA grows or shrinks. It affects them not.

The elephant in the room is that these so called elites either allowed New Orleans to turn into what it has become, in which case they were grossly negligent and incompetent-or they were unable to stop it, in which case they never were as powerful as they were given credit for.
100% yes, too self centered to use their good breeding to help anyone below them. They deserve to lose their city.

What are some of the surnames of these old-line NOLA families? I’m assuming the old creole families like the Villeries (sp) are included

Awesome responses. Of course I know you can’t just “join” Comus. Just wanted to get a conversation going on this. Always find these secret society’s interesting.
Meeting of the Courts is fascinating and almost feels like a fraternity ritual at times. Would think the secret “members” would be pretty obvious during this as they aren’t wearing masks and it’s located in the Marriott. Tons of people around to see who’s there who have nothing to do with either Krewe.

My wife's college roommate was a Lapeyrouse who seemed to be all up in that.

The Mafia started in Louisiana, not the East Coast.
Lots of secrets.

Comus and the like were for WASPs to take Mardi Gras from the creoles. There are a few actual French Catholics in there originally, but not many
South La is predominately Catholic, but the Protestants have always been the ruling class

There was a lawyer, now deceased, who had ties to all the blueblood organizations and also was widely acknowledged to be Marcello's inside guy with the state government. If you wanted a tax abatement, you went through Marcello to him. Those two groups may have seemed worlds apart but beneath the surface they were intricately connected.

I mean, getting people to talk isn't hard, it's one of those things where if you work anywhere near the circle you can pick out who is in it or a reporter can just go to the right person and find out everything they want, it's a not so secret secret. It's just some random wealthy people to most people anyway, it's not like the names will mean much to most of the population.

They use to ride in public parades, the government could have easily tracked every single one of them around those days with that era tech. A lot of them are still connected to current parades and of course the balls, with todays tech it would be a joke to think you could keep a secret society secret that operates in public places with known schedules if the gov or some other group wanted to track them down. It's for show and tradition.

Completely agree.

This is completely wrong. It's the old line that has chocked off growth and new money entrants.
They aren't fighting over scraps... it's complete opposite.
Most of the old money has long since sold off businesses that depend on the city. It's all money invested globally. Money invested locally is all in real estate... which is doing quite well.
The power they flex is behind the scenes. This allows them to maintain their power and influence... while all of the negatives of the city do not impact them and their families.
If you are an old money elite in this city... it's never been a better time for you.

I don't believe this is true for anyone who has to live in New Orleans or spend a lot of time there. I don't care what you have or where you can afford to live.

Did he have a son who was also a lawyer (might be late 40's to late 50's now?)

Lol. Are you saying that the Villere family isn’t prominent? Or Charbonnet?
