Not a pilot, but they where in a helicopter. Could he not have done a controlled or slow descent? You can pretty much land a helicopter anywhere.

why not land and wait it out? instead of circling and taking some weird flight path?

Once they were in the air and the fog was that heavy, I wonder if he couldn’t see where to land.

So basically NTSB will chock this up to pilot error.

From what is known to me it seems the pilot made several poor decisions.

Such an avoidable tragedy.

It’s was circling because the ATC didn’t clear them to fly yet

this makes zero sense.

If you’ve never ridden in a helicopter, every minor amount of turbulence makes you feel like your stomach is going to fall out of your arse and that the helicopter is going to go down.

Helicopters fricking suck.

Listened to the ATC. Certainly appears to be pilot error. No explanation as to why he did what he did. Hope he wasn't trying to show off for his passengers or something.

Kobe's chopper appeared to first encounter weather issues as it was above the L.A. Zoo.

The first circles were an approximate 15 minute hold for an inbound flight and a go around at the airport.

The rest was not a good sign. When they dropped below radar and radio the shite hit the fan.

Be real. this wasn't some Random dude. You think a man worth 500 million isn't going to have one of the best of the best private pilots.

even if he was one of the best private pilots, he wasn't smart enough or good enough to realize that they didn't have acceptable weather.

What expertise do you have to determine that this flight pattern was “weird”?

You never know with rumors and info during incidents like this, but there was some talk about this not being his normal pilot.

ETA - Now that the pilot’s name has been released, it appears he did regularly fly for Kobe and his family.

I’m sure if the pilot would’ve seen the mountain..he would’ve missed it.

Weather conditions on Sunday morning did not meet the Los Angeles Police Department’s minimum standards for flying, a spokesman said. Due to foggy conditions, LAPD had grounded their helicopters in the morning.
Per CNN Twitter. Seems like they shouldn’t have ever taken off in the first place.

You don’t have to be an expert to know flying south directly into a hillside is weird.

It’s not that weird when you account for the pilot not know where he is due to intense fog.

The best pilots fly commercial.

Most pilots fly private to accumulate hours for a commercial license. For regular planes at least, not sure if that's the case for helicopters.

If you overrule your rich client enough times, they get another pilot. Of course you're still alive, so there's that.

i'm pretty sure that if you tell your rich client, hey man this isn't safe to fly in and you have your daughter with you, he'd listen to his professional pilot.

pilot should've known better than to take off if LAPD wouldn't fly in the same weather.

Thats what I’m saying... based on the OP, he said that his flight pattern was “weird” and I couldn’t discern that from the notes listed above... it was most likely an issue with visibility and ground (or in this case, “mountain”) awareness.
