But in consideration of the continuing coverage, outpouring from random places (eg. Tribute billboard in New Mexico), and incredibly sad surrounding circumstances (eg. Daughter with him), this is arguably the biggest celebrity death of all time; at least in the United States.
JFC......... no

Buddy Holly, Big Bopper and Richie Valens all died in the same plane crash. Three very popular and young prolific artists -- all killed at the same time in the same crash.
Kobe's death was shocking and the children who lost their lives definitely bumps the shock factor up -- but Bryant was retired as a player and his body of work was established no matter if he died in the crash or as an 80 year old man.
John Lennon's death I'd argue was bigger. Elvis, despite his poor appearance, was a shocking death. I definitely think recency bias is in play here.

The princess di tragedy is most similar to Kobe, and far bigger on a global scale. This is basically our princess di.
Princess Diana's funeral was one of the most watched television events in history.

and about eleventy-gazilion more 24/7 news outlets than in the examples you've cited

I think I was in HS then and didn't really follow the news much at all and still remember how big of a deal it was.
Could you imagine if there was social media back then?
But to be fair, just about every event, news story doesn't have a long life span today.. I think part of the reason is because of social media. When it comes out it is everywhere and that's all you see for a few days.. After about 3 or 4 days people are ready to move on to something else.

you're SEVERLY overestimating the attention span of Americans.
After six months this won't even be as remembered as the death of Marilyn Monroe, and will only be talked about by hardcore lakers fans and his friends and family.

There’s a fricking tribute billboard in Benton, LA.

JFK
MLK
John Lennon
Elvis
All four were bigger and that’s just off the top of my head.

John Belushi was full of comedic art that had not emerged yet. He was huge, but would have been a mega-star.

As big as the death Princess Diana was, it has less meaning to people who don't really follow the Royal Family.
Same thing with Kobe. For those who are not huge sports fans, it has less meaning.
People still talk about Princess Diana's death and I think people will still talk about Kobe's death for years to come, but on a smaller scale. He will always be in the conversation comparing him to Jordan... Or as one of the best all time..
And the "Mamba Mentality" is something that will live on and not just in sports. It will be associated with anything that you have to work hard and stay focused to achieve. "You got to have that mamba mentality". Just because that is what made him great. He was known for his work ethic and his goal of always trying to get better and not just wanting to win.. But to dominate.
And the relationships he had, not just with other athletes, but other successful people.
I am just saying, it will not be on the scale Princess Diana was.. But he will live on in certain.. I guess circles..

I have a question that may or may not be stupid; once it became impossible to navigate visually, couldn't the chopper pilot ask for clearance to say 3,000 feet so he would be visible on radar (and maybe above the fog/cloud cover) and have the controller guide him to a safe place?
I saw this addressed and they said way to much air traffic in that area.
There is a YouTube reply thread started by Gary grant that is interesting to read with lots of knowledgeable commentary.
After reading the comments from experienced pilots and flight crews I’m wondering if the pilot didn’t get spatially disoriented in the fog and flew into the ground.

I thought Kobe beef was a brand of beef owned by Kobe..
I am joking... But there have been people who thought this..
