If the topic is getting a refund, then the family has absolutely done something wrong, that's not even up for debate.
It certainly is up for debate. I don't think you understand insurance.

They didn't take the insurance that "insures" they can get a refund, that's doing something wrong by any definition.
No it's not. It's called making a choice. It's not wrong per se. Unwise? Perhaps.

You are a grade A douche

The rental company should have told the flooded renter they would put the property up for rental and if it gets rented for the days they had reserved, the flooded renter's money would be refunded in full. If not, then the "no insurance" policy would be in effect.
thats the solution offered.

That is what it sounds like they told her.

Only a fricking idiot wouldn't pay for the trip insurance for a vacation on the gulf at the start of hurricane season.
Maybe. And yet, the reason for them needing the insurance doesn't relate to a hurricane.

Flood insurance is available but a lot of folks elect to do without....Do you claim 'tough shite' to them?

Who doesn't get rental insurance these days?

Which the little butthurt butterfly represented as a "NO" on social media.

Its horrible what happened to said family, but if you pay in full for a vacation it better not be every last dollar you have, which apparently it was for these guys trying to cancel a $2k or less trip to free up money. Do you not see the absurdity of this family and their whining? They have no emergency fund or anything and are paying in full for a vacation soon?
I know you are an OT baller and all but $2k is a lot of money to anyone. Especially someone who may have to live in hotels, buy all new food, and fix their house.
The agency deserves all the shite they get for this. I know what the contract says, but sometimes you need to waive contractual provisions out of a sense of humanity - which this agency apparently lacks.

I didn't read every response here but last week I booked a huge house in destin for next year and paid a pretty steep price for the insurance. Would have been better for me just to not get the insurance and if something happens then just bitch and get people to post bad reviews? Kinda not fair to people who actually pay for the insurance which isn't cheap.

Doesn't matter. You get the insurance because maybe some shite may happen ( hurricane odds being highest on the gulf in august) and in case you can't go on the vacation you get your money back. Common sense.

bet it seems pretty cheap compared to all the bad press they're getting
I doubt it hurts them much...you see they have something people want. Also people on here talk about repeat business, well I am sure they have a client base that won't waiver based on this.
ETA: I would be more sympathetic if the people wouldn't have run to FB so quickly for social justice

apparently
thats why i just follow policy every single time.
the renters had a chance to get the insurance and decided not too - why should i reward them for being irresponsible?

Sure hopes it's big and as unwavering as you think it is. They won't be getting too much new business for a while.

What do you not get about the concept of travel insurance. These situations are the exact reasons it exists...

I stick by my points.

We just came back from Ft Walton last week and rented our condo through Kim Lang. They're TERRIBLE and I will never deal with them again. We tried to check in to our condo at the 4pm check in time with the door code they gave us, but it wouldn't work. Me and the SO called them probably 50 times for an hour straight and got no answer, although they were open for a couple more hours. After standing outside our door with all of our bags in tow for an hour, we decided to jump in the vehicle and go TO THEM at their office.
We walked in and saw 4 employees sitting with their feet propped up on the desk arguing about some guy they knew, cussing about him like a sailor in front of the 3 kids with us. This went on with us standing right there for 5 minutes before my SO said "EXCUSE ME!!" and one of the girls finally acknowledged us. We told them about the door code and the girl had an attitude like it was our fault. After about 15 minutes of calling around she apparently came up with a different code and sent us on our way.
The ENTIRE half hour we were in their office, the phones rang literally nonstop and every employee sat there completely ignoring them. It was maddening.
After fighting traffic BACK to our condo for another half an hour, we finally arrive and carry our belongings up to the condo YET AGAIN. We put the new door code in and it doesn't work AGAIN. We both try to call the office for another 30 minutes, this time leaving increasingly angrier voicemails because we learned that they play aloud in the office while we were there earlier. I finally leave one that's about 90% cussing and 10% content, telling them that I will never use them again and will make sure everyone possible knows this story, and that their "boss" would get an earful from me. I'm threatening everything down to their pets and cars over voicemail at this point. We decide to load our belongings and drive to the office for a second time.
This time they actually call back before we can get there with a new door code. After fighting traffic halfway back to the condo one more time, about 2 1/2 hours after we arrived from driving 10 hours to get there originally, the door code worked. I've gone to the beach probably 70 times in my life and this is the first and last time I'll ever deal with those assholes. I wouldn't wish them upon my worst enemy.

Sometimes people are more important than money, contracts, and insurance. Humanity shouldn't only be observed when someone pays a premium for it.
