Good luck trying this strategy on the banks holding the mortgages of the flooded homes. No one would hold them to that standard so why hold this rental company to it?
You can always tell when someone has never gone through this type of shite. Every mortgage company with a property in the affected area codes will have payment relief anywhere form 3-6 months. Chase gave me 6 months after Katrina.

that said, they offered a reasonable option i think. if they really wanted to go above and beyond - a full and immediate refund would be great, but i cant fault them for not coming out of pocket (especially if just a middle man in the transaction)
Agreed.

Death in the family?
potentially. if verified, and immediate family i would likely let the person slide still.

Husband laid off?
I would likely charge them, unless i could re-rent the space

Kid fell ill?
got the flu? or extended hospital stay? if life changing type of illness id likely let it slide. if something short of that, probably charge them, with possible flexibility based on how extreme the illness and how easy to re-rent

Where do you draw the line? All of those things could be the worst thing and most costly thing ever for a family, literally no different than this family is going through.
well, i think those could be very different. losing everything but the clothes on your back is not the same as those.

Well and letting someone walk away from a $2,000 vacation is not really the same as letting someone walk away from a $300,000 or more house/30 year mortgage. One is a relatively cheap short term commitment that doesn't really hurt anyone. The other is not.
So this tiny rental company should eat the cost because they deal with smaller/shorter term contracts while the mega banks get to collect? I don't follow

Who doesn't get rental insurance these days?
I posted about it then, that was 100% on me, didn't ask anyone for refunds. It was my screw up, I took the gamble as I couldn't foresee anything happening to make me not able to go, at least not a very good chance. But something happened, I didn't pay extra and I lost that time.

Eh. I can't tell you the number of people I've seen who stayed in their homes for years without payments after the financial crisis.

How do you know the owner of that condo is not located in one of the flooded areas and is counting on the rental to fund the repairs of their home.
Rental company took a poor stance initially but seems to making an attempt at helping these people out.

What a perfect comparison to losing all your possessions. You usually make great arguments, this was not one of them.

I think this qualifies as irony... I stick by my points.
If not, who should pay for repairs?

Nothing beats a good mob mentality. This rental company is getting roasted because the people who booked it looked to save a few bucks by not getting rental insurance, which is intended for literally this exact type of scenario.

hell, the owner may have already spent the money on something else and simply not have it to refund. thats what a non-refundable payment sometimes results in.
and theres nothing wrong with that. if what they can offer is a chance to have someone else re-book, great! if the have the means and ability to immediately refund and potentially lose the money -- even better, but shouldnt be mandated by mob rule.

Again, these people failed to purchase 2 kinds of insurance that would of bailed them out. Not once, but twice here.
There are deaths, tornados, earth quakes, mudslides, floods, etc. all the time.
How is this flood any different than say if a 2nd story water line broke and flooded the entire first house? That happens all the time.
That is why you have insurance. The people haven't even had their money taken yet, there's a decent chance it will still be rented.

Its horrible what happened to said family, but if you pay in full for a vacation it better not be every last dollar you have, which apparently it was for these guys trying to cancel a $2k or less trip to free up money.
I'm not reading the whole thread to see if someone already put you in your place but you're a god damn a-hole...
This family lost everything so guess where that emergency fund goes... Get over yourself.

We walked in and saw 4 employees sitting with their feet propped up on the desk arguing about some guy they knew, cussing about him like a sailor in front of the 3 kids with us. This went on with us standing right there for 5 minutes before my SO said "EXCUSE ME!!"
Cue up a Ron Burgundy "I don't believe you" gif.

Please post this in the price gouging and fraud thread I started.

Was this supposed to have some relevance to my post to shell?

I'm pretty fricking sure you know how it's different. But in case I'm giving you too much credit, let's start with infrastructure damages.

but wtf kind of logic is it that you can NEVER stray from policy?
if you want to give people relief from catastrophic events, write that into the policy.
IF its not there, its up to the renter to take the necessary steps to insure they are taken care of if tragedy happens

I would love to see a age breakdown on both sides of this argument.
Probably breaks down more along the line of condo owners who rent to try to afford their condo mortgage vs. those who don't own or at least don't depend on renters to make their mortgage.
I can go through this thread and find the guys with condo mortgages who need that rental payment to make it happen.
Anyway, I'm a complete dick about many, many things in life - but this is one where a little kindness would not kill anyone.

i especially cringe on the viral bashing because its so rare that its based on the full story (and can literally run a good person out of business)
This was MY full story that happened two weeks ago, not something viral. I just saw the thread pop up and was glad that they received some much deserved shitty karma.
Just like with my story, if they would've displayed even borderline decent customer service this wouldn't be an issue and no reason to fly above the radar. Kimberly Lang realty is absolutely raking in the dough and wouldn't even notice a good deed cancellation, especially on Labor Day weekend when the unit will most likely get booked again easily.
Seeing this story and knowing what they're like in person doesn't help give them the benefit of any doubt.

Also an example of how good PR helps companies... I in a haste booked a room at embassy suites in baton rouge because my area flooded and had no power. I forgot to check and see if they were pet friendly and they were not. I called the HHonors number and explained my situation and she cancelled the room with no penalty even though it was day of the reservation and booked me downtown Hilton which was pet friendly.
Now I'm telling folks I know who don't stay at Hilton because they definitely didn't have to make that effort for me.
