Its horrible what happened to said family, but if you pay in full for a vacation it better not be every last dollar you have, which apparently it was for these guys trying to cancel a $2k or less trip to free up money. Do you not see the absurdity of this family and their whining? They have no emergency fund or anything and are paying in full for a vacation soon?
I'm glad you're using this situation to get on your moral high horse to laugh at the flood victims who you deem unworthy of sympathy.
How dare they plan a vacation without thousands of dollars in the bank in reserve and multiple insurance policies!
I hope you get banned

and they haven't lost anything since they can still go on vacation

Technically not, but if that measly 7% is worth a horrible rating, then they're not very business savvy.
These people haven't done anything wrong either. At the end of the day neither of them win. These people lost everything and the business has a bad rating now. The business would have likely still rented the place out for the weekend anyways.

You act like a big shot with your leased Rolls Royce and act like you have some sort of business knowledge when all you are is a piece of shite that did nothing to be where you are besides be related to the right dying guy.

There is a difference between sympathy and agreeing with someone going on a warpath against a company that is just following the company's rules. The accuse the company of cruelty, FFS. Ridiculous.

Right. For better or worse, you HAVE to consider social media in doing business in this day and age. Sure they are legally entitled (and possibly even morally) to do what they do under contract law. However, if you are not considering the possible repercussions and hit you may take by holding firm on something like this on such a well known event, than you are not really a good businessperson.

Sure, seems like the obvious play to avoid the negative pub is to just refund it. And it's obviously poor timing to criticize a family for losing everything they have, but...
That's the exact reason you get the insurance, for unforeseen circumstances popping up.
I may be wrong here but I'm guessing the only way the story could "spread like wildfire" here is if the family posted it, and to me that is very shitty. You're going to out a company like that and damage their rep because of YOUR screw up. That really doesn't sit well with me.
As one or two others said, I see both sides. It's certainly ok for the family to request the refund. It does make more sense for the company to make a one time exception, but I surely hope(seems unlikely) the family didn't badmouth the company as a result because they wanted to save a few bucks on the insurance, that's pretty shitty.

Except they did in this case since they chose not to get the insurance. Everyone plans to make the vacation when they book it. No one books a vacation if they aren't expecting to go. The insurance exists for situations EXACTLY like this one. It sucks, but they are in the wrong. Posting on social media to have hundreds of people who had never heard of this company give them a poor rating is deplorable. These people are absolute shitbags.

Where do you stand?
Insurance only works for reason...You play the odds. Flood insurance is available but a lot of folks elect to do without....Do you claim 'tough shite' to them?
As I said, they don't HAVE to do anything...they can play this the correct way and do very well out of it.
I do not want anything for nothing...in this case they are going to gamble the rental money but I would take that gamble.

Did they cave yet? If so, I know what my goto excuse for future insurance-less cancellations will be.

The only way my parents will get any money back is if someone else books those same dates in that condo so praying that will happen. Shame on you Kim Lang Vacation Properties and if anyone has time please post a review on there Facebook page on how you feel about this. I just couldn't believe it, she said they have a financial responsibility to the owners and I understand that but these are EXTREME circumstances
If the rental company had said "tough shite" then maybe just maybe some of this would be justified. But it isn't. The rental company explained that they are on the hook for the cash to the condo owner, totally reasonable, and that they would try to re-rent the place and refund the money. That is more than an acceptable response.
Is the rental company supposed to eat the money because of a disaster? How many rentals are they supposed to eat? One? Two? Twenty? Until they go out of business?
I am sorry but the person who ran to FaceBook is a fricking retard. Think of this, now that you have destroyed their business on social media, they probably won't be able to re-rent the condo and refund your parent's money. arse hat.

so businesses should fold to the possibility of bad publicity when they are right?

and they can still go on vacation. Maybe had they taken a different course of action they would have been given a refund. Since it's only Tuesday I am guessing they tried cancelling either Sunday or Monday so they took to the social media pretty quick.

These people lost everything
We don't know that for certain.

explain the part to me where it's any skin off their back to cut these people a break.
Where do they draw the line? If they see this as an exception and choose to refund, then what stops the next renter from claiming a family member died. Then they are assholes for denying them a refund. A week later someone says their child got sick two days before their flight, or their flight was cancelled/delayed due to weather.
The trip insurance is there for a reason. You choose to take a gamble by not purchasing it. The Rental company should not be berated for sticking with their policy.

GTFO with that nonsense.

exactly the family if they're that close to insolvency shouldnt be planning getaways
I know you think you're a big shot, but there is nothing here that suggest they were close to insolvency. They could very well have a 6 month or 1 year emergency fund or other financial means, but when you lose everything that you've accumulated over a lifetime an emergency fund cannot replace all of that. They may have lost everything but the clothes on their back.
That said I see where the rental company is coming from. They are in no way obligated to refund the people there money, but sometimes compassion should trump business especially in these extreme circumstances.
I guess what I'm trying to say is your just a pompous a-hole that thinks you're way smarter than you really are.
