They work pretty well.
I still fall over every now and then, but not as often as I used to.

Having that extra bit of speed really helped their balance when they’d start. The two that I had the ramp for learned to pedal a lot quicker than the first one. It’d likely work great on a balance bike as well on a kid who enjoys it.
With my oldest I just took off the wheels and pushed him. I think he was 4, but had the bike well before. It was time. My daughter is wild, but refuses to learn, she could benefit by a good fall though
Like I said I just think with this one he would benefit more over a tricycle. It would also make my daughter learn ASAP as well.

Buy a regular kid bike and take the pedals/crank off. Balance bike. Put them back one when ready to pedal.
Seriously, though, this is what I did.

I started mine on a Haro 12”, now called the Shredder. Training wheels off by 3.

Certainly seems smart. Would have to find one with a slanting frame.

It’s what I did as well. They only need the balance bike for a short time and they’ll be ready to start peddling.

Thanks man
We got a Stryder (sp?) and it’s worked well. My two year old really zooms around on it

We got a Strider. It was around $90. Some are a lot fancier and come with hand brakes. I'm not sure that's necessary. Our kids got used to hand brakes really quick when they started riding their real bikes.
Had the Strider for my youngest kid. Put him on a real bike at 3 and he never looked back. Did the training wheels with the older ones it took them until they were about 4-5 . My youngest started to shame some older kids with training wheels and pushed them to get rid of the training wheels.

1. If they don’t have a bike with training wheels then they will learn quickly to ride the balance bike. If they do have the training wheel bike they will ride it instead.
2. There is a balance bike you can buy that has detachable pedals, so when they start balancing well you can just add the pedals instead of buying a new bike.

If you want to teach your kid to ride a bike first buy them a Razor scooter. They will learn to balance while being only 1 inch off the ground. The balance they learn on the scooter will translate later to the bike. I did this for both of my kids and the transition from scooter to bike is extremely easy.

My grandson started on a balance bike then moved to an electric one in his early 2s. Does jumps on it and rides it on a motocross track. He got a regular pedal BMX bike last week for his 3rd birthday and was riding it almost instantly. Picking up a Yamaha PW50 (no training wheels) for him next week.

2nd the Haro Shredder.
Balance bike at 3, Haro Shredder 16" at 4 with no training wheels and now he's on his brothers 20" Redline with a 18-19" top tube at 5 and jumping ramps.
Easy.

Take the pedals off of a regular bike. You now have a "balance bike" without actually buying one. Our kids learned this way, and it's literally the same thing.

My kid loved it. Also rode a real bike really early. Never had to deal with training wheels.

They absolutely work. I trained my kids and a few neighborhood kids to ride a bike by taking off the training wheels and pedals. They riding off into the sunset in a half hour.
