I don’t argue, just drink good beer and listen to good music.

Sound advice.

I was raised in Tazewell, Co.

Meth has done a nasty deed there.

Greenville, SC was underappreciated when I lived there 20 years ago. I don't know how you go wrong with most of the southern Appalachian area... Except... You can live on the west side (TN) and be reasonably "free-ish" a la Florida, or you can live on the NC (and to a lesser extent SC) side and have decrees essentially from RTP/Charleston ruin parts of your life.

Smokies win, all the time.

Music pun?

Great area. App grad and have a house up there since 2004. Love it. The town is liberal... As many small college towns often are. It is still growing too fast for my liking but that happens. I now wish we were 5 or so miles further in the sticks but we aren't...Love football games there, long weekends. Plenty of inexpensive land nearby...

Boone, Banner Elk, and Blowing Rock are really nice. I wouldn't mind being there either.

You people have to stop publicizing the good spots.

I want to leave this shithole so bad. I just don’t understand how people get out of here and afford a house literally anywhere else. You put the filters in on realtor and everything is over a mil. I could retire here 10 years earlier than anywhere else.

but the challenges of trying to live up there with what is coming with the supply chain should make you very, very carefully think about it.

Will it shock you to learn that western NC has paved roads, interstates, railroads, and airports?

We stayed in Ashe County outside of W.Jefferson.

Ashe County is known for their cheese (Ashe Cheese). When we visited W. Jefferson with the kids, the play on words was endless.

Live in Charlotte , but when we retire, it will be on property with easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Mt. Pisgah Inn and the camp ground across the road is a family favorite.

Which shithole? I'm assuming not Ruston, but you're pulling a LemmyLives where I don't know WTF you're actually talking about

That's kind of a weird thing to focus on considering the stars in the night sky are the same everywhere in the country and it just needs to be dark for them to look good.

A stretch of North Carolina I've always enjoyed is Hwy 276 from Brevard through the Pisgah forest to the Blue Ridge Parkway. When I was a kid our parents used to take us to Sliding Rock, that water is cold as hell but it was still fun

My grandmother was born and raised in Burkes Garden. She remarried when I was 13 in 1983 and moved back up there part time.

Our first day there, my brother and I were walking around and got invited to breakfast by complete strangers. We weren’t use to that.

We would visit (work on the farm) during the summer for a couple of weeks. Beautiful area. I’ve heard about the meth issues up there.

I'd almost say that Burkes Garden is the most isolated place east of the Mississippi due to the geography. On top of that it's pretty sparsely populated. I bet close to 300 people live in there.

I know folks that live in Burkes Garden and have been there a number of times. That place I'd beautiful.

It's a really small world.

I spent a fall semester at Lees McRae college in Banner Elk. I regret not staying there longer. That place is so beautiful in the fall it is unbelievable. I wouldn't mind moving back there when I retire.
