To when the time comes. It was our 2nd year IAR up there(stayed about 6-7 miles away just across the border in SW VA.last year) and we just love the entire High Country of NC. We stayed in Ashe County outside of W.Jefferson. It's a big enough town that has everything and the climate is wonderful, especially in summer. But the best thing about the entire area is that life just moves at a slower pace. And we can all afford to slow down a little.

Also, the scenery is unmatched. Especially this time of year when fall color is at peak. That entire section of NC has the highest average elevation in the Eastern US.

It is a great place. Used to live in WNC and continued to visit for work for many years. Great little towns and close to some larger cities when you need them. Out in Colorado now, but that area will always be a "Possible" for us.

It's a great pace of life for sure, but the challenges of trying to live up there with what is coming with the supply chain should make you very, very carefully think about it.

I hear good things about Boone.

There’s an Indian casino in that area, and App State might provide decent FB entertainment for a while.

We're about 2 hours away from Boone in SW VA. It's a cool area, so I don't blame you one bit.

I lived in Black Mountain for several years and finished school in Boone. Can’t say enough good things about the area. It isn’t without warts, but it is certainly one of the finest places in the South if you can make it work - good paying jobs are in short supply.

My company has an opportunity to expand in the Raleigh area and we keep mulling it. Certainly seems to have a brighter future than NO/BR.

No doubt. There is a reason that the Southern Highlanders were the toughest people in the South bar none. They had to wake up fighting to survive. From growing corn on rocky ground to an almost total lack of game after they ate them all following 1929.

Do you think the roads are impassable for months or something?

The longest I was trapped up there was after an ice storm. 16 days before we could get out. Whole home gensets are a must.

Our plan when we retire in a few years is to sell our house 8n central Florida and buy a cabin or something like that up in those parts. We have a small place at St Augustine Beach that we will call home.

Maybe an RV with a RV resort lot that’s customized for seasonal living. They’re becoming very popular to have for the snow birds that come to Florida.

Visited NC Piedmont area a while back. Want to go explore more of the state, and I definitely have an eye on it for retirement.
