We are building a pipeline here in Houston and a good portion of it is on Exxon property and we were just informed that Exxon is about to cancel all non-Exxon labor on all their properties. So, I am about to lay off about 30 myself . This fricking sucks. Hopefully I can bring them back in a few weeks but once I release these guys, they are going to scatter like the wind and I will be lucky to get 20 back.

That must be tough to have to make that call for so many people.
I only had 2 employees for my small shop and had to lay them off right away since I'm in NY and wanted them to at least be able to file quickly for unemployment.

I'm so sorry -- my husband had to actually FIRE someone one time for doing a really crap job and felt bad about that in itself.
Luckily he's got two employees who are healthy and we're still farming so we're good so far.
Hopefully you'll all be able to rehire soon.
eta: I'll add if you're in a funk/depression over it, ANY of you, PLEASE find someone to talk to .. this can not be easy and there's no shame in talking it out.

I’ve never managed anyone in my career. I suppose that’s bound to happen one of these days, and this is the thing that I dread the most about that.

Every business owner worth his salt feels this way; we take it as a personal responsibility when we hire someone.
They are making a commitment to the business and they usually have a family they are supporting.
We have all kept people on longer than we should in spite of falling revenue, with the anticipation that things will get better.
It looks a lot worse this time, and it may last longer.
I feel for you and I trust that God will open doors for you and your employees.
