Sorry, but all your hopes and dreams about how terrible fraternities can be are just untrue. Some are douches, some are not. Some are preppy, some are country. Some couldn't change a tire and would use daddy's credit card, some can rebuild an engine. Some play golf, some hunt and fish. Pretty much hit all those type of people in the organization I was in. Same as you would any cross section. Yes, they tend to have more family money, but only reason to get pissy about that is jealousy.

I respect the military a lot, but to be fair, this sounds less enjoyable. Bunch of Marines in my fraternity too, they gayed out more than the rest of us FWIW

I did all the same things that you would do in a frat for $15 a semester.
And we owned their frat boy asses in intramurals.
Wasn't talking about hazing either. Was talking about the drunk arse parties they would have all the time. Self-respect doesn't have you passed out on the lawn of your frat mansion at 3 AM.

People act like there is some secret cabal of assholes dictating how much it costs for everyone else.
Who the frick do you think makes the budget and decides what it gets spent on? Which, mind you, is another benefit of getting involved in a fraternity. Running a six figure social budget is pretty good experience.
I learned to lobby in greek life. Shaking hands and making backroom deals at 19-20 when trying to get a new sub zero fridge, tv, etc. It's great preparation for how to be an a-hole in the real world.

Trust me, I know. I'm not either. I think the greek system is overrated. You can have fun in college without being greek, and the networking benefits from all the brothers (or sisters, for sororities) don't exist everywhere or in every profession.
Fwiw, I had rushed one frat, decided it wasn't for me, and had the chance to jump on and found another one when it started on campus. Just wasn't for me. I was already friends with all the guys anyway.

Uh, that's my point. It's good experience for a 20 or 21 year old, and they get to see the very practical outcomes of their decision making and face the scorn of their peers for frick ups. I'm not one of these "you have to go greek" people. Nor do I take it very seriously now.
But like most social establishments that persist for 150+ years, there are plenty of beneficial, healthy and constructive things you can get out of greek organizations.

This is what I think. If it is for you, then good for you. If it is not, then good for you.. There is no reason to judge someone based on whether or not they participated in Greek life.

Isn't this the truth, I ran in to a multitude of GDI's that hated me simply because I was Greek and I truly didn't care about them one bit. It was borderline obsessive with a handful of them.
