A decorated carriage parked in front of the Antioch Baptist Church located in Houston's Fourth Ward, 1908. Nice rims.

Ah, the old carpetbagger view that everyone in the south are dumb backwoods racists.

On the contrary, black culture itself was on the social upswing before our gov. decided it needed "help," i.e., subsidizing. These pictures are a reminder.

When did smiling for pictures become standard practice? Im always fascinated by old pictures like this and they're all just standing there with scowls on their faces. Could be because they're so damn hot with all those clothes on.

Probably more so because it took forever to take photos back then. They had to stand still for like 15min or so. No one was going to smile for that long.

When dental care became commonplace. People didn't smile because their teeth were jacked up.

I think Juneteenth is important to have, but I always thought it was a Texas thing. Has it been celebrated nationally all these years? Or has it just picked up steam nationally recently?

This is really interesting. I had no idea that Juneteenth used to be so widely celebrated and by so many. I imagine that it wasn't easy, especially in some areas of the South, for public celebrations to take place.

No, it was largely Texas but it's gained some traction nationally. I first learned of it from a black girl from Odessa in the mid 2000s and other black people I worked with at the time didn't know anything about it either.

I think the grumbling about Juneteenth is a combination of people who just hate the idea of another "black holiday" (which is a stupid complaint) and those who are annoyed by media/people who hadn't heard of Juneteenth 5 years ago acting like anyone who doesn't celebrate is a backwoods bigot.

A national holiday celebrating emancipation adopted from the Texas holiday makes plenty of sense. It's just too bad it'll be with all the modern trappings instead of the spirit shown in those photos.

I believe it’s the day slaves in Galveston found out about the emancipation proclamation
