So, our buddy Newell Normand's tirade from last year is back in the news with the talk of trying to get marijuana legalized in Louisiana to cut into the budget deficit. I think this is grandstanding at it's very finest. If his deputies weren't making weed busts they wouldn't have been shot.

quote:

"We are thinking about decriminalizing marijuana, and we think all of this s*** is going to go away when we do, so, hello?" Normand said. "The havoc it will wreak on our streets will be insurmountable."

"We want to point out four officer-involved shootings?" said Normand. "Why are we not talking about the drug dealing? Why are we not talking about the fear of the families of my deputies?"

Not necessarily. Profits from the legalization of marijuana would be allocated to different organizations such as law enforcement.

They could, but they shouldn't.

The state sales tax collected SHOULD go to things like healthcare and education.

If a municipality wants to add an additional sales tax, then they can do that and spend that money on police.

If cops would stop killing people's families they wouldn't be targeted in retaliation.

He's big buddy with JBE, who is looking for any way to bring in revenue for the State, so let him go cry to his Governor.

His arrest rates go down

Conviction rates go down for DA office

They do not see motivation for legalizarion

While education would be priority number 1, there would definitely be funds channeled in other directions as well. There would be plenty to go around.

Because that's how cops react to everything.

Legalization would remove a large portion of street dealing. What a tool.

This is rather old btw - Honore's bill didn't even get out of committee, and Honore is no longer even a member of the House.

When you listen to public officials you would think they are running publicly traded companies. They are so worried about growing and protecting revenues.

That original video is from April 2015. It's being discussed right now as a means to help with the deficit.

On this forum you mean, or actually in the legislature?

You would think the job of a sheriff of a major area would be to keep the streets safe, but in reality, it is to act as an employer via the jail.

Leagalizing things means less people in the jail.
