re: Joe's Crab Shack is now the first major restaurant chain to drop tipping

The only people who will wait tables for that money are shitty servers.
If you are half decent at your job, you can make much more.
That being said, does everyone honestly think they are going to just spend the same minus tip? Prices are going to go up and you're going to be paying the same or more with, more likely than not, worse service.

Probably better off for the waitress to take tips and not having to claim it all and be taxed to death.

I didn't think there was much tipping at joes crabshack to begin with
Exactly. Not to mention I would bet at least half of the tables demanded an item be removed from their bill when the check came so building the tips into the price of the meal is the wise thing to do.

I'd say from my history of black tables...
50% - Stiff
40% - Shitty tip (10% or less)
8% - Really good tip (20% or more)
2% - Amazing Tip
0% - Average tip (between 15% and 20%)

There's a huge difference between making someone a sandwich (about a 1.5/10 on the customer interaction scale I just made up) and having to wait on someone for an hour + and cater to their every whim (8/10 on the customer interaction scale I just made up). Comparing a sandwich shop to a restaurant is apples and oranges, especially a place like Joe's. Someone once told me, "Waiting tables is a soul sucking experience." The quote could not have been more accurate. Until you have waited tables and dealt with the trash that come in and treat you as less than a human being because they are ordering food, you really can't understand. You have to smile at these people and give them great service knowing the outcome and the effect on your nightly bottom line. If you're making an a-hole a sandwich, they are still a very tiny fraction of your day.
If you can't smile and be nice to arseholes for $12/hr (or whatever the amount was in the OP) then get another freaking job.
quote:
Off topic, for those insinuating you'd get tipped poorly at Joe's because of the black people, the worst customers I ever had at that place were white trash that would order shitloads of expensive food, be demanding as frick and run you crazy, and leave you a tip so small that it didn't even cover the 3% tip share.
Uh it is common knowledge that white trash are the worst.

Then they pay me in exact change, literally, with nothing but a pile of change and left it on the table for me to sort with a note that said "Don't have such a shitty fricking attitude next time". I didn't recall having a shitty attitude, but oh well.
I had a local government part-time job while in college. I issued building permits. Several times people attempted to tip me, which I couldn't accept, but each time it was a non-white person.
One the other hand, the white trash type were the most difficult. They would complain about having to meet code for certain things like installing sewer, electrical poles, etc. Every once in awhile they would bitch about having to do something, not do it, get screwed by contractor then blame us because they got screwed.

And what percentage of the entire white population is white trash? Perhaps <10%. Now, what percentage of the black population is trash? Your comparison is not proportional. Just because every once in a while you'd get some white trash doesnt mean that you dont have about a 50% chance of getting stiffed by a black table. Im sure many in the service industry can back this up.
If we really wanted to stereotype, then yes, black tables would tip less than a white table on average. I also had more incidents with people getting up and straight berating me to my face with black customers, often because they were being completely unreasonable, and, on very rare occasions, I'd call them out on it. The percentage of calling people out leading to getting berated to your face is very high by the way in the restaurant industry.
My point was that if you are going to talk crap on black people tipping, don't forget to mention white trash at the very bottom of the totem pole. Also, you probably are more likely to encounter white trash working at a Joe's Crab shack in Baton Rouge than other restaurants/places.

50% stiff
45% shitty
4% decent
1% good
0% outstanding
The two obese ghetto chicks who were the only black customers to tip me 20% and were one of my more memorably enjoyable tables. Meanwhile I had several upscale black people stiff me.

I think his assessment that less than 10% of the white population is trash is low, but even at 10% thats a lot of fricking trashy white people. They also love to go to places like Joes.

You are already getting ruffled over an internet message board talking about waiting tables, and you somehow have the audacity to talk shite to people who have to deal with interacting face to face with assholes for extended periods of time on a daily basis?

You're supposed to tip at Sonic??
I've read about some folks here tipping the maid at a hotel room. I'd never even heard of that until someone posted it here.

its bc most of them aren't circumcised as to why they don't have good tips.

You're being really nice
White trash tables come next in this matrix. Although the black culture as a whole did seem to stiff more (and certainly tip less) than most. They were the toughest tables as well. Very picky and unreasonably needy regardless of great or poor manners.
Young people,teens-college freshman were the same.
ETA: to the sonic posters, I worked there during highschool and a little during college as a carhop.
I'm not sure if you're "supposed" to tip, but people did, so I stayed.
The cash money I made there for a teenager was stupid good. Plus 5.15 minimum wage at the time 2002-2003.
What did sonic carhops in though...credit card machines. Thankfully those came after I left.

White people it breaks down a bit. It's not as universal
You have the elderly who are going to give you a bad tip. Redneckish ones who will give you nothing or shite. The best are the suburban and upscale white folk
Redneck riviera types are the best because they tip, drink a lot, and have fun.

Dealing with their shite isn't worth $12 an hour. Know how I know you have never waited tables before?
I waited tables at a Mexican restaurant. I was making table side guacamole fresh for one of my tables, and a customer from another one of my tables looked at me while I was making the guacamole and shook his glass at me(aka I need a refill). I told him I will be with him when I am finished. So then he gets up and finds a manager to refill his glass for him, and then bitches to me about how "he doesn't play 2nd fiddle to anyone" and "expects for his request to be fulfilled as soon as he asks for it to be" and "the guacamole wasn't going anywhere". Of course I get stiffed.
The worst part is that my manager treated his complaint like it was completely valid and comped off the drinks for the entire table. Yeah, I should just abandon making guacamole for my table and leave it sitting there so I can go refill your glass.
shite like that ruins your hour and entire night. Puts you in a bad mood. It's not worth $12 an hour.

Loft seasonal places they'll do better
Servers blow through money pretty quickly, so they aren't prepared for a dry run

10% is a shitty tip? News to me.
A dollar for every 10 is spot on for bad-average service.
