Everyone in this thread should watch the movie Spotlight on Netflix.

Spotlight is a great movie about the Boston Archdiocese scandal. They give some statistics at the end of the movie about how widespread the abuse and coverup was in Boston. It's stunning how many kids and priests were involved.

Wonder how Jesuit will handle damage control on this one..

today’s email from the current president owned it, deplored it, and noted the present measures to prevent such things (e.g. reporting it immediately to law enforcement as the first and only option). Not much else you can do.

Most of the present generation dealing with this and those subjected to guilt by ascociation are dealing with the previous generation’s transgressions. Fitzgerald, the president at the time and one of the most honorable men I have ever known, would have been nearly the accuser’s age in 2012 when he had to deal with it through no doing of his own.

And the first New Orleans scandal is mentioned as well as listed. It shows scandals worldwide. Amazing.

Protestants wanna be all like

Well that kind of stuff never happens in my Lutheran Church...

I got news, it does, maybe not as frequently but it does.

No offense but that email was the equivalent of thoughts and prayers. Fronk was the wrong choice to replace Fr.Fitz in the first place, but that's another discussion for another day.

I had to leave the international child rape cabal behind. The ghoulish machinery still turns as it is conducted by the pinko commie pope.

I now go to the Methodist church were the pastor is high energy and the assistant pastor is an OT 10. There are former Catholics all over the place at my new church.

You seem like you might need some special counseling.

Ask, and ye shall receive. Knock, and it shall be opened up to you.

He is pretty liberal with a very military way of doing things, and he came in his first week saying he chose this Jesuit high school over the others because of the lower tuition—that it wasn’t a “rich kid’s/beautiful people school”...I think he is finding out that if not for the “rich parents and alum” from old Metry and uptown that donate huge amounts of money, the tuition would not be as low as it is, and we would not have the scholarships in place to help the 35% that receive some sort of aid.

No one will again be the charismatic Harry Thompson, but I believe he is figuring it out—its only been about 18 months—it takes a little time for someone that spent their entire life up north, in the military, and on naval vessels to learn the intricacies of dealing with parents and the huge alumni base (many with big heads) of the Jesuit NOLA community. Irritate someone in the military—oh well—chain of command—deal with it. Irritate a certain alum/parent and you possibly lose a $50k+ donation and have to deal with the fallout (cause everyone knows everyone and word travels quickly).

Maybe I missed the stories about the Lutheran church leadership organizing a worldwide cover up of sexual abuse throughout the church. To try and equate what the Catholic church has done to isolated cases of abuse in other religions is ridiculous.

What more would you have him do? What can anyone do who inherits a situation of this sort, regardless of how they stack up to any former school president or his politics? Maybe he should add a section to the annual President’s financial report noting child molestation payouts as a line item within operating expenses? Maybe he should disinvite Ramon from future alumni career days for writing the article?

All you can do is focus on the present mission of the institution and religion as a whole, facilitate whatever reparation or support the victim may request, and refrain from saying stupid things in the media.

I think it would be the better part of valor to not be harsh on Ramon. I have been trying to share my story for several years, and no one believed me. When he heard his own eighth grade principal interrogating/negotiating with me, it made his toes curl, and he got mad. Ramon, a former Jesuit High School student, actually stood up and someone finally believed me. Since we are in the business of tearing down statues, if I was Mayor of New Orleans, I would choose to erect a statue of Ramon Antonio Vargas and his mighty pen at the confluence of Esplanade Avenue and Wisner Boulevard, where the statue of P. G. T. Beauregard once stood.

One day you little tiger whipper snappers will be parents. The central message is that we must evict the evil out of our church and protect our children.

Wow... Welcome to TD...

It's Ironic Vargas being a Jesuit Alum, you'd think he'd protect his own.. Jesuit Alums are usually pretty good at that...

Glad your story came out...

I'm glad your voice was finally heard and believed. I wish the best to you and other victims of sexual abuse.

Guess he will probably have to give the money back for breaching the confidentiality clause of the settlement. Ouch.

Do phediphiles become priest because they will have access to kids or is it because priest can't have sex and at some point anything that is vulnerable becomes sexually arousing?

I think this is a fair question. My question is this, why is there a higher incidence of sex abuse claims (reported to insurance carriers) amongst Protestant religions because neither of your scenarios is applicable to them? Are Protestant pastors just monsters because they are able to marry and have sex? Very strange. Plus, is it a much larger coverup because you never mention the abuse claims against them?

Where are you getting this information comparing the two?

And To the other poster, I’d venture to guess they won’t ask for the money back.
