There are only two ways to do this study:
You go by statistics of pedeophiles caught in the Catholic Church and general pop
-we know this is extremely flawed because the Catholic Church is known for covering up cases. Once again this is known, not my opinion. Also, child abuse in general often goes in unaccounted for completely
You interview both group subsets and ask them if they are a pedophile
-do I need to explain why this is flawed?
I have seen the studies. They are not worth the paper they are printed on

I honestly feel like I am taking crazy pills when people point to the studies
The studies all revolve around “accusations of pedohilia in the Church vs general pop”
and I am like are we being serious?
The whole discussion started because the Church is covering up abuse scandals, so how can one with a straight face say the accusation number holds any weight at all

Is that your expert opinion, Mr. scientist?

Good God.
I'll stop, becuase I really don't want to defend the catholic church or even look like I am, but shite, man.

THey all revolve around the two ways I describe. I want you just to describe how a "scientist" could perform the study any other logical way
The best study comes straight from data gathered by accusations. It is the John Jay study. And the study itself gives the disclaimer that these numbers are hard to pin down due to the secretive nature of the accusations

I'm just wondering what makes you think way more priests are pedos than the proportion of the general population. Is it the news? Your undying trust in the general population?

If you were a pedophile, explain a better situation than the catholic church. You get free access to children, and a powerful organization willing to cover your crimes
It isnt the churchs fault it naturally lures pedophiles, their blame is the coverup

Teacher, coach, guidance counselor, janitor, employee of any business kids frequent, Congressman.
It's not exactly as easy to become a priest as it is a carnival ride operator.
Do you think the number of pedos in the general public according to any study is how many there are? You assume that side is more accurate than the other in your "do you like little kids" scientific questionnaire scenario.

quote:No. It would be higher as well due to kids not reporting in general.

Some of those get way more unfiltered access than your average priest. Some even get more cover.
Priest, preacher, brother, Rabbi, is an average vocation for kid access with an above average barrier to entry.
eta:
This thread is about a janitor, for what it's worth to those who didn't read the article. At a school with more non-clergy with equal or more access to kids than those who are.

None of those occupants require celebacy. When a heterosexual man becomes a priest, it means he's sacrificing, and spending the rest of his life struggling against his natural biological drive. A lot of men rule it out for that very reason.
There's a whole other pool of candidates for whom lack of access to adult women isn't a problem at all...

No it's just those northern Catholics that like to diddle kids

This is truly disheartening. Jesuit grad as well, and upset to hear about this.
I believe that what we are seeing today in the Catholic Church, teachers and students thing, and even the #metoo are coming to the forefront with the ease of access people to tell their story- social media. Majority of those involved seem to have one common thing- a position of authority or power. Even in this case the custodian was a former ball player. I want to see justice for those truly harmed, and yet still concerned with the ease to get justice with out a thorough burden of proof.
This particular case seemed to make sure the information was accurate and details were confirmed. Therefore this person was compensated for the atrocious actions taken upon him.

Jesuit grad here as well.
When I was there, we never had any issues with priests or brothers come up except for an accuser who came out about Fr. Boudreaux molesting him 30 years prior. But this whole situation is sad to hear about. The pandora box within the Catholic Church has been opened, and it could possibly get worse as we find out more.

Nah. They can go have sex with consenting adults instead they want the power over the children in their care. frick all of these pedophiles and the people that cover it up to allow it to continue for decades. Exactly the reason my daughter will not be going to catholic school
