Last week my jaw started hurting out of nowhere.

Dentist says it's a sprain to my temporomandibular joint. TMJ for short.

Want to know if any OT's have tips on healing up / reduce the pain?

No, but my jaw pops a lot. I carry a lot of stress in Myke area.

I've had tmj issues for over 10 years. Sometimes it doesn't bother me at all and other times it's excruciating. Ice it for 20 min at a time. Muscle relaxers have helped at certain times when I clench my jaw excessively due to stress. I've also slept with a mouth guard since I was 16. I take it each dentist visit to make sure it's properly aligned. Can't sleep without it

Thanks. Just took my muscle relaxer. I've never had a problem before in my life. And just last week it hurts to chew, open, smile, you name it. My bite is off too. Strange.

I've been applying heat. Taking IBUs and muscle relaxers now.

I have no clue if a mouth guard will help. I don't grind.

Don't open extremely wide. 800mg of ibuprofen 3x a day for 3 days.

Crazy mine just started doing this over the last month, is the pain at the very back of your jaw on one side almost at your earlobe?

Sounds like you dislocated the articular disc, and the joint hasn't reduced. That will cause acute bite problems.

It can happen if you slept in such a way that it could put pressure on the lower jaw for a few hours. It will heal on its own in a few days. If it's a reoccurring issue then find a good prosthodontist that can make simple devices you can wear to set your jaw in a more neutral position with a little bite reprogramming. Something you don't want to have repeating regularly though, can cause issues that result in uneven tooth wear or damage that can lead to severe issues with your teeth later on.

If it was out of nowhere, you should be fine. Mine was broken in two places and wired shut about 6 years ago. It will always give me problems unfortunately. You should be okay, with no serious trauma.

When you suck dick don't just go for it all at once. You have to work the tip a bit to let your jaw loosen up. That's a rookie mistake.

Been dealing with it since High School. As others of said, it seems to come and go. Not sure what sets it off, but it can hurt pretty bad sometimes.

My mouth guard helped me more than medication.

Broke my jaw in a car accident about 8 years ago. I was warned by doctors that TMJ could be an issue. About 3 times since then, I've had days where it basically feels like it locks up. Like someone is sticking knives in my face right below and in front of my ear. Usually around times where I'm really tense. After about a day of talking through my teeth and making very slow mouth movements when necessary....along with taking as much aleve as I can fit in my mouth, it usually goes away.

Pull down on lower jaw as hard as possible for about 5 seconds. Helps me, loosens up jaw muscles.
