Idk about this
We trusted the Japanese once. Look at how that turned out

beam solar power from space
Doesn't the sun do that naturally already?

Wasn't this a plot line to The Man With the Golden Gun?
I was hoping more for this ...

This kind of power was in an old Sim City game back in the 90’s. Worked real well until the beam randomly went haywire and destroyed a bunch of the city.

Sending satellites on paths so you ensure data and internet for fast communication between planets.
Quantum entanglement renders that whole idea stupid.

The only thing that changes is that more conversions = more inefficiency. It's still grabbing energy that wouldn't be on earth and putting it on earth.
There's so many technical issues here that I can't see how the hell it would be viable as a reliable source of power. That investment could easily fund a myriad of other energy producers that actually would be reliable, productive and clean.

Interesting. Its worth experimenting with. You never know what advances like this will lead to and how smart people can make it cost effective
On the flip side, you also don't know what corrupt governments and individuals will do with this and make it pad their bank accounts.

Or we could just use nuclear energy and continue to make it more safe.

What happens when microwaves hit polarized molecules, like say water in the air?
Now those would be significantly less powerful. So I am unsure what, if any difference that would make.

I'm not a scientist, but I did stay at a holiday Inn express one time about 10 years ago. I think I can be confident in my answer when I say you're correct.

We have a green project that literally boils the atmosphere!!!
I always thought the water in the atmosphere was vapor, how do you boil vapor?

So very many of these modern energy projects are just government money grifts that don't pass the slightest sniff test.
Absolutely true. But this project is probably an attempt to address a couple of issues with solar. With a satellite, you can maximize your solar collection time, eliminate the effect of atmosphere, dirt, and debris (like bird poop), and you eliminate the issue of taking up surface area for a solar farm. That all has some merit but may be offset by the losses in transmission. In short, there are reasons to consider this but I think it is ultimately still a non-starter.
On a side note, a very similar idea was postulated by Isaac Asimov in the novel "The Gods Themselves" but the collection site was on the moon and he also stated there were concerns about the health effects on people who lived near the dish sites where the microwaves were beamed back to earth as the delivery method for the energy.

You can't trust those wily Japs. No way in hell it's for "solar power." Those bastards will be able to flash fry Pearl Harbor in a matter of seconds.
