I tend to agree with George Costanza and doctor visits.

doctor of medicine is MD, doctor of jurisprudence is JD, doctor of philosophy is PhD. why call one doctor if you don't call the others doctor? Doctor is by definition an honorific title. Physician is a description, doctor is not.

Society and the public in general equates “doctor” with a medical doctor.

If you have a heart attack in a restaurant and your wife yells out, “Is there a doctor here?”, what honorific title do you want responding and do you think there will be confusion between the MDs, JDs, and PHDs on who should step forward?

OP’s “logic” explains why the nation and even internationally the human societies are in the shambles they are in.

See a shrink OP. Doesn’t even need to be a truly competent one. Just get help and do NOT procreate!

The ironic thing about “doctor” is that for centuries it was an honorific for PhDs. When medical practitioners began agitating to use the term they were laughed at and scorned. It took a long time for them to elbow their way into sharing that honorific. Yet they have become so successful that they are now the arbiters of who is, and is not, a doctor.

Probably mad that the doctor warned him about monkeypox.

I don’t care what anybody calls me.
When someone calls me “doctor” it is usually followed by a demand.

The insurance companies decide most things and the hospital administrators decide the most of the rest.

That’s why I’m retiring.

Things in medicine have changed dramatically in the last 50 years.

Autonomy is mostly history.

AI will probably handle 80% of visits in 25 years. The machine will decide what you have and what you get.

With AI maybe there will be less misgendering and more climate change health assessments. After all that is all that matters.

Why is this an issue?

In an examination room, there’s only two of us. Why not just have a conversation? We both know who we’re talking to, so no names are ever necessary.

1. the latin root word, docere, means "teacher."

2. because someone went to school for a long time and passed some exams, I am expected to refer only to them with some honorific title when lots of others like lawyers, ph.d. engineers, physicists, psychologists, etc., who would likewise be "deserving" of an honorific title if it were a matter of schooling but are not.

3. if those at the very top of their professions, such as presidents and CEOs, who have put in years and years of actual hands on work in their field are not deserving of an honorific title, why should i call joe bob cooter , m.d. from texas tech doctor?

This reads like a post by some angsty feminist 23-year-old. You should ask your doctor, er, physician to check your testosterone levels. I will say, however, if his name is indeed Joe Bob Cooter, you should probably seek a second opinion.

If you call me by my first name in an exam room, while I am figuring out how to save your life, I will correct you once. It’s a matter of respect.

F doctors. They tossed the Hippocratic oath away during Covid. They showed they really weren’t trained to heal.

Actually, people not questioning social orthodoxy is why human societies are in shambles. So basically the opposite of this.
