Yep, absolutely. And always good to have everyone under the same roof and at the dinner table together.

I read this thread this morning and decided to hit the grocery store ( Safeway ) and look for some meat on sale to put in the freezer.

I came away with 6 lbs of 80/20 for $13, and two 5 lb packs of bone in Chicken thighs for $10. ( buy one get one free ).

It's not anything fancy but chili's 3 for 10.99 is a good deal considering a hamburger meal a mcDonald's is 8+ bucks

We had steaks tonight, and I paid $20 each for 12 oz ribeyes at our grocery store. The 12 oz ribeye at Texas Roadhouse is $22.49 and comes with two sides. It's fricking bull shite.

A 12 oz steak would feed us 3 meals, for the two of us, with sides included. 12 oz is way more than a serving. Maybe portion is the problem. And TX Roadhouse and their sides isn't the answer either.

While I think this is definitely hyperbole, I do see where the OP is coming from. It's amazing, when I go and shop at the grocery store, how ridiculously expensive it is relative to how little I buy. And that's with the slight "frequent customer" grocery discount I usually get.

While we’re on the topic of expensive stakes at grocery stores. Steaks, salmon, seafood, etc. should not be eligible to be bought with food stamps.

That’s silly. It’s clearly significantly cheaper for me to cook at home than to eat out, and hand to heart, I eat a lot better too than most places around here. Now, the caveat to that is if you don’t have items at home because you don’t regularly cook at home, then you’re going to have to purchase a lot of product all at once because you don’t have it on hand already. That being said, once you get yourself set up, there is no way you can’t cook at home cheaper than you can at a restaurant.

You bought their “choice reserve” grade beef which they claim is better quality than regular choice or select beef. I have no idea whether that just marketing or the beef is actually better, but it explains the price. Looks like they are pricing it less than prime but well above regular choice grade.

I’ve been casually following this thread to see where it went.

All my life I haven’t had any idea of what beef costs if you buy it in a store. I grew up on a dairy farm and we butchered our own. No shortage of hamburger, steaks, roasts, etc. My parents sold the cows a few years back but my wife’s brother is raising beef after he sold his dairy cattle. That’s where we get ours from.

A month ago we split an entire animal with my brother, my parents, and a coworker of mine. This coworker was always in the “get beef at a store” category and look for sales. With the cutting and packaging costs it was still under $3 per pound and it’s high quality prime stuff. The hamburger is at worst 80/20, The types that my brother in law is breeding together (black angus and something else) kick out some damn good sized rib eyes, and the tenderloins are exceptional. My coworker was floored at first by the initial cost but when it settled in that he was getting high quality hamburger at $2.84 a pound and the tenderloins, NY strips, ribeyes, sirloin tip roasts, etc were also $2.84 per pound he had an epiphany that this was a good investment.

The prices people will pay thinking they got a good deal going out for a steak blows my mind. $60 for two people plus sides? All I’ve ever known was that I can go to the freezer and get a better steak for pennies.

When we go out to eat we never eat beef. It’s a waste of money when we have better quality beef at home. If the cost of beef seems too high and you have the storage space, look into sourcing it locally and eating beef at home without buying at a store where the quality is a crapshoot and it’s marked up.

Could you post some more detailed info on the cost involved? How much did the steer weigh live? What did you figure the cost to get to this weight was? (Say cattle would bring $1.65 on the hoof at the sale barn) what was the turnout? 65%? What did the processor charge per pound?
It kind of sounds to me like you and your brother need to go into the meat selling business because you are keeping costs incredible low. Would not be hard for you to double your money on what you are doing.
