I don't wing accommodations but other than that an itinerary was useless with my 4 kids. I could make a list of things we may want to see and they would decide white water rafting/kayaking/hiking was so fun they wanted to do it 3 days in a row This may or may not have happened multiple times. I also research restaurants of different types because I don't want to eat somewhere mediocre if there is one with better reviews a little further. And they have also randomly decided they wanted Mexican food or the like in a strange city.i do also like to try local favorites or regional specialties. So not necessarily an itinerary but definitely some preliminary review of activity availability and restaurant proximity is done.

I like a loose plan. Some places I want to eat or see need reservations.

We plan out 1 or 2 places to see or tours to take and just wing it the rest of the time. It's nice not having to be somewhere at a certain time while on vacation.

I despise this.

My wife used to do this. Now we just go, and then figure it out with the concierge. Way better that way.

I know people who like to “have fun” on vacation and not be shackled by multiple plans. When they visit places I live they often get here and then suggest we go to a particular place for dinner and I explain that requires reservations weeks in advance. Same with certain activities. I can’t tell you how many excursions and activities require advanced planning.

Exactly. I think people don't realize that time spent on a plan ahead of time from your sofa = no work, no thinking on vacation. That's far more relaxing than scrambling to figure out where to go, what to do, and then standing in line or being turned away once you finally pick something.

I don't itinerary for the beach, but I also don't really go to the beach, so that didn't come to mind initially.

Salmon is right though. I learned a long time ago that no itinerary = eating at a tourist trap or chain far more than it = eating at some hidden gem. Obviously there are exceptions.

If you’re going to the beach no itinerary. If you’re going skiing no itinerary. If you’re going across the country / around the world you’re probably going for some reasons and should have one.

It depends on the vacation. Are you traveling around to different locations or staying in one place. A tour of Europe gets an itinerary. A beach vacation does not.

And there was the time I thought I'd just drive until I got tired. I ended up west of Little Rock, and all the hotels were booked there and Ltitle Rock for a Shriners convention in Little Rock.
I ended up driving to Memphis, got in at one a.m.

Since then, I'll plan and work around to avoid staying near casinos where the rooms are a lot more pricey than fifty miles in any direction.

If it's a place I've been before like a beach or ski trip, no itinerary except grabbing lift tickets or scheduling an excursion if necessary.

If I've never been there and requires a multi hour flight, itinerary is appropriate.

Hoping to go to Romania next year for the opening of "[link=(Draculaland)]https://www.flightsandfables.com/dracula-land-romania-guide/[/link]" .

Say what you want, but day passes are approx $40 a day after conversion and the on site hotels are cheap as well. I also want to see what they think a "vampire, gas lit Mardis Gras in New Orleans" is like in Romania. After 4 days, I plan on 5 days in Romania, so I think an itinerary will be necessary for that trip to see as much as I can. Basically, see the fake version and then see the real thing.

Mine likes to plan such things out in a similar nanner. It all went that way too far one time and I was exhausted from too many hours of driving. A bit of discussion reset the planning to reasonable expectations.
We enjoy our travels together very much, but some rules and limits are in place so we both get what we want and need.
Work on setting up a plan so you both enjoy these trips and maintain that relationship.
Remember that she is your greatest priority. Make it work.

I do an itinerary and usually prepay for tours or excursions or the like so I can to guarantee that I’ll have a seat.

I know that plans can change so sometimes I just go ahead and buy two consecutive days of the same tour or excursion, whatever it is.

I booked two consecutive days to ride on the Strathspey Railway in the Highlands of Scotland, a First Class compartment with food. I did it to have some schedule flexibility. We missed the first day due to inclement weather conditions but made the second. I didn’t call to cancel the first day’s trip and they were still really pissed about it the next day.

Apparently they hold the whole train for ten extra minutes after the scheduled departure if you don’t cancel…

Who knew

We flew to Vegas and rented an SUV. I planned the first week but we winged the last week.

We spent a day at Sequoia NP, 2 days at Yosemite. We had hotel reservations outside Yosemite in Oakhurst for 3 nights so that worked perfectly. We them went to Carmel and down Hwy 1 for lunch then back to Marina. Ate at Cannery row.

Next day was San Fran and we wanted an evening cruise on sailboat plus ride streetcars and Chinatown plus ride up to Nob Hill. Then dove up to the Redwoods and tent camped at Richardson Grove.

We then completely detoured and spent 5 days getting to and staying in southern Utah. Went To Lake Tahoe, Bodie ghost town, Hwy 395, Lee Vining, camped again at Bryce Canyon, Zion NP. Then 2 days at my cousins in Las Vegas.

My wife wouldn’t have planned any of it and we wouldn’t have seen much. I plan much of it, but always allow room to be spontaneous. She likes the structure but she won’t plan it.

It was a great 2 weeks.
