When he used it in that sentence there’s no way me at 12 years old wouldn’t bust out laughing

There is no way that is from 2007. Look at the hair styles and clothes. It looks late 80's early 90's to me.

ETA - shite, it looks like it is 2007. That is crazy.

Ehtiopia had the negus slavery until 1942.

The Italian fascists actually freed slaves down there.

Somebody's going to be real surprised when they think they are clever to drop a "we wuz negus" and get the shite beat out of them

Actually pretty interesting derivation, in that it's like YHWH or Egyptian hieroglyphics in that we don't actually know what the vowel sounds originally were:

quote:

Sometime during the development of the Ethio-Semitic language family "m-l-k," the original triconsonantal root for king, was elevated to the generic word for "god" in the form of the broken plural "?ämlak, ?amlak," as well as the word for angelic or divine when conjugated as melekot. It is possible the word related to Hebrew El (Elohim) or Allah (Ilah) was lost due to a word taboo much like YHWH. During this time the ancient Semitic term for a ruler or lord, n-g-s (from Proto-Semitic vng? 'to push, press for work'), began to mean "king." Along with that term, in the early Ethiopian state of D'mt the South Semitic term Mukarrib (priest-king), mostly associated with the Kingdom of Sheba, was in use and the Ge'ez malak (???) remained in throne names into the Gondarine period. The universal existence of a semantic shift in n-g-s across the Ethio-Semitic languages is evidence that it doesn't comprise separate branches of the Semitic language family.

In an ancient Aramaic inscription mentioning the god ?A?tar his name is followed by the title ?????? (ngš), corresponding to Ancient North Arabian ?????? (ngs), meaning "the ruler."[4] The vocabularies of various other East and West Semitic languages such as Akkadian contained cognates to the Habesha term "negus" with definitions ranging from regional lord to tyrant.

2007? I got one from around then too. Back before Childish Gambino did comedy skits that no one knew about.

They were just toying with him at the end

“Can you say the word?”
“Negus”
And can you say the word loudly for the judges
“Negus”
One more time?
“Negus”
