Before Hezbollah took control of Lebanon it was the Dubai of the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Christian/Secular Lebanon was thriving.

You serious Clark?

You watch thousands of your countrymen being slaughtered by a terrorist group hiding out just over your border and you think this is about vengeance?

It’s more about “never again.” As in “ensure there is no way Hamas can repeat this.”

It's amazing how many people simply can't grasp the fact that extremists like Hezbollah, Hamas, ISIS, and the rest DO NOT WANT PEACE.

They want to kill everyone who isn't like them, that includes all of the idiots in America that constantly simp for them.

Sky News reports “Pentagon official: American special forces arrived in Israel specialized in hostage-free operations. We do not rule out carrying out a special operation to liberate our citizens in Gaza“

I don’t see that ending well.

It’s a dense metropolis in a foreign war zone. They are likely to get shot at by both sides when they show up somewhere that turns hot.

I've seen my fair share of carnage. Nothing breaks my heart like seeing children suffer. Sadly, no matter where I've been, there's always dead and orphaned children...that's a reality of war. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any other answer. I hope Israel (of which I'm no fan) turns Gaza, Lebanon, and most of Syria into parking lots. Egypt better play nice, or they'll lose everything to the Suez. I hope nothing lives...so that there's no one to eventually seek revenge. I like the Iranian people that I've been around over the years...their government is not a representation of the overall population. That being said, I hope Iran oversteps so there's an excuse to finally pay those sons of bitches back for every fricking IED and weapon that killed and maimed my brothers. "Peace in our time"

Egypt is likely staying out of this.

They don’t want the Palestinians and they are aligned with the Saudis, who are likely to resume peace talks with Israel once this is done.

Beirut was nicknamed the "Paris of the Middle East."

Then again, Kabul was once secular and pretty awesome.

Would be super cool if either or both ever went back to that.

CIA has already paid off Palestinian guides and informed the IDF of where to cease operations.

You may want to reread my comment.. never used the word vengeance..

and the "never again" rhetoric is great but unattainable with the world chirping "restraint" under the circumstances..

IMO.. you throw the rhetoric of "restraint" back into the worlds face by making the world responsible for Hama's actions against your people due to the support and comfort given without any accountability for their actions. And you do that in a very public way to get them to shut up about exercising restraint..

Israel needs to root out the Hamas and Hezbollah influence in their region but Hamas and Hezbollah are proxies of other nations... That discussion is a much more complex issue to address..

There's realpolitik blowback too if you go slaughtering a people.

And Israel has overreacted to small potatoes rocket launches from Gaza.

They get to overreact bigly to what happened here. Sucks for the people of Gaza just stuck there (though, Israel seems to be working on safezones to allow civilians a way out) but that evil by Hamas requires a staggering response.

Iran is such a cool country naturally speaking. I wish they'd get their shite together. Would love to visit.

Funny to see another Jarhead basically echo what I have been saying. First I am no fan of the IDF nor the Mossad but they are generally damn good at their jobs (the first tier troops I worked with). Secondly that in the coming months, yes months because that is what it will take of the IDF doesn’t want to waste battalion sized units in MOUNT, we will be plastered with pictures of dead Palestinian women and children. It will be true unfortunately but also will be heightened in the media as propaganda. We need the weak willed segment of our society to understand this is an unfortunate byproduct of actions of Hamas & political leadership. It is war and it will happen and we need to harden against it if they are going to root out this cancer!

I mentioned pages ago, when the hostages were first taken and people were responding with "just rescue them", why rescue/recovery is unlikely.

While not impossible, the probability is very low and the risk is astronomically high.

There's a reason there have been hostages held in the Strip for years without rescue. Even with Israel's (and others') capabilities, there they sit.

People simultaneously ...

... vastly underestimate the capabilities/resources that can be brought to bear

... overestimate the ability to pull it off

Drones can make the f=difference in success or failure. I would think we can use them to our advantage for this type of operation.

Can you imagine the reaction if some politician asked for "restraint" the day after Pearl Harbor? The day after 9/11? They have a right to strike back and they should respond strongly enough that Hamas is crushed and those who support them are punished.

I don’t disagree with hitting back necessarily, but 20 years after 9/11 we accomplished basically nothing hitting back in Afghanistan.

Israel is a civilized nation and can’t really kill off Hamas - permanently. There are countless replacements outside the borders of Gaza, and something else will take the place of Hamas in this conflict.

If this really is a play by Hamas/Iran/PA to scuttle a bilateral Saudi/Israel agreement, tell Saudi it’s time to make a deal or we start blasting Gaza like no one has seen before.

I just don’t think Israel’s security will be better in 10 years if they commence a full throated invasion of Gaza now. Normalization with Saudi today may make for a safer Israel in 10 years.

But I am admittedly weak in the knees when thinking of how many regular folks die in Gaza if Israel does now what should be done to Hamas. Just an awful situation.

That could have been finished within a month.

The powers that be wanted some long drawn out war

What people don’t comprehend the decision matrix includes what happens if the worse case scenario occurs. There is absolutely no way they would send in tier one assets unless it was basically 100% certain that they would not take casualties or be captured.

Edit to add a “not”
