Can you imagine the reaction if some politician asked for "restraint" the day after Pearl Harbor? The day after 9/11? They have a right to strike back and they should respond strongly enough that Hamas is crushed and those who support them are punished.

I haven’t been able to keep up with all of the developments. Any idea when Israel is expected to actually begin its ground assault/invasion into Gaza?

Tonight or tomorrow night in my opinion.

And this is why I don’t think it will be a limited 2-3 day operation.

People are fricking with them before they do the first thing, so why should they listen to them AT ALL about how they go about it?

World opinion” is already trying to stop there from being an operation to begin with.

The amount of fricks Israel likely gives about “world opinion” right now is negative.

World opinion always pushes Israel to quit. If not they would have eradicated Palestinians a long time ago.

A point on the reserves being called up.

Some of the reserves will be used to augment the main force, but it's not a situation where they need to call everyone up in order to go because they need the bodies.

The reserves, on top of standard support roles, typically fills in the holes left when the main force shifts its focus and launches, so they'll want them in place before kicking things off. The IDF is primarily built for defense, so when they go offensive, they need to backfill all the defensive responsibilities.

One of the big vulnerabilities here is the West Bank. While Israel is occupied with Hamas in Gaza and potentially Hez in the north, things could get extremely nasty if elements inside the West Bank get froggy.

Abbas and the Palestinian Authority operate differently from Hamas (mostly "non violent"), but there are militias all over the place in the WB that can/will do whatever they want whenever they want. (Just because the PA governs the West Bank doesn't necessarily mean they can control everyone in it.)

In other words, the PA/West Bank as a whole could stay out of it, but PIJ or other militia elements could unilaterally run attacks all over the place in the B and C zones.

I think we'll see some of that; the extent of which will largely depend on the resources the IDF and Border Police have in place to prevent it (this ties back into the point about the reserves).

At a minimum, I'll say there will be at least a few opportunistic attacks in the B/C Zones once (if it does) the full scale ground operations have most of the focus shifted elsewhere.

If they're successful, we'll see more. If the IDF/Border Police and other units can keep the lid on it, it may stop there.

When Hamas does small scale shite, it is hard to justify a massive arse whipping.

This? Hamas made themselves too big to be small but too small to be able to really threaten Israel.

I think what we are about to see could be a biblical level arse whooping.

I'm all for Israel disappearing Hamas, but I find it interesting how many people have jumped on this train when the aggressor is a non-nuclear weapon state. Now I understand the underlying problem is fear.

Yea if this stays strictly between Israel and Hamas I suspect Hamas wont be heard from for a long time. I just hope other players dont stat getting involved too heavily to really start sparking off shite on a global scale.

The reason for this response is that Hamas pretty much gets to operate with no restrictions, performing war crimes and then getting saved whenever they crawl back to their hole.

Israel’s likely to leave them no hole to crawl back to.

That's a viable strategy, or part of one, on Hamas' part... you're dead anyway and you can't flee. Might as well combine with fighting on their soil with IEDs/House-to-House instead of hunkering down and waiting to be laser sighted because the hostages aren't going to work this time.

I’m thinking more along the lines of Avengers 2…

Baron Strucker sends out his troops telling them there will be no surrender then, the second they leave, tells his top aide he’ll be preparing to surrender and to secure stuff that will allow him to negotiate a deal.

Short version - These idiots are being sent out as a distraction while someone up the food chain is trying to bolt.

Yep. Been saying this from the jump.

I've lived/worked more than one of these dustups and the usual sequence of events is

attack
Israel responds
the world bitches about the "disproportionate response" and calls for restraint
Israel backs off

This one is most definitely "different" and I think not only will Israel go much further than normal, there is the potential for it to get pretty damn big.

We'll see soon enough.

That's why we're sending our carrier there, to make others think twice before getting involved.

And the peace brigade is calling for a cease fire.

Israel ain’t even warmed up yet and they are calling for peace. Just shows that “peace” is “stop us from getting the ever loving frick blown out of us” from a lot of people.

Rockets launched from Lebanon and the IDF responded with artillery.

Man I'm crossing my fingers that was a single salvo of rockets that got shut down.

While I agree that this is what should happen and I think Israel is capable of pulling this off, I am not sure how and what political pressure may be brought to bear that would effect that outcome..

I feel that politically, there may be a way for Israel to put the rest of the world on the defense but I think the righteous indignation they are feeling is clouding their judgement..
