Yes and No, mixed bag.

My Mom, most definitely negative. It is always something with her. She ruins every holiday, anything. Constantly throughout the years needs money. Life improved with distance from her but still interact for my sisters. Love my siblings and they are a huge positive.

My Dad, best man I ever met.

I travel a lot for work and on Thanksgiving day, will make the 2nd year I’ve gotten to be a father. I know about monotony and how things can go stale but I’m in the opposite boat.
Absence truly makes the heart grow fonder for me. It’s not easy on the wife or myself being gone but seeing how much my baby grows or matures within the 10 days I’m gone at a time makes me truly try to cherish each moment I’m home with her and her mom. Life is short and I wanna make the most memories I can.

Yes I know it’s the OT and I appear soft, but I’m a lover and love being a family man. So no, my family is not a net negative in any fashion.

You don't, that is beautiful man.

Most ppl here are fat with fat ugly af wives or gfs. They feel and look absolutely miserable, so their persona here gives them a win (in their head).

Carlin was clever but was clearly a pessimist.

Take the fame and money out of his situation and you wouldn’t probably look forward to having him over if he were your family member. (More especially towards the end of his life, he got really sour and mean, at least on stage)

I’m living the American Dream; I truly wouldn’t change places with anyone.

Dad is a narcissist who is emotionally a middle schooler.

Mom is an overbearing enabler.

Brother is a narcissist who is emotionally in kindergarten.

Sister is actually somewhat normal, somehow.

At least they help me move.

My dad is like that too, plus he loves to make scenes at restaurants. He's terminally online but forgets everyone has a camera that could record him. I stopped going anywhere with him. He also has atrocious money habits and spends monry on hobbies he never aticks with. I gifted him artist paint brushes because he used to do that and I don't think he ever used them.

No argument here.. and im not a Carlin superfan or anything.. but I dont assess comedians based on whether id 'have him over' or 'have a beer with him' or whatever.. I look at whether or not they make me laugh, and how good their material is... I think when he stated the quote above, he was dead-on the mark, and im not even sure if it was as true when he said it 30 or 40 years ago, as it is today- even though he has been dead for many years .

That's great, but I dont think the American dream is alive and well in 2026 for most people ... I dont know for sure though, neither does anyone else reading this thread .

I'm the youngest of 2. Brother 14 years older. No parents, no grandparents, and only one (1) uncle left. I am married to my high school sweetheart and we have 6 kids together. It gets hectic at times, but this is the life I created, so I work through the highs and lows.

I left America because of the absolutely psychotic cost of living .. I was making a decent upper middle class income, yet I was still priced out of my home country .

Yet 11 million people, many risking their lives and the lives of their children, chose to emigrate to the US during the time period that the Biden administration policies brought on the highest inflation in 40 years. Go figure. Most Americans figure out a way to make ends meet. Some cut bait and run.

'Making ends meet' was never a problem for me.. that mentality tells me you are probably a paycheck-to-paycheck type person ..... For me, I was used to a certain level of saving and investing- after paying bills & living expenses- and at a certain point, inflation and the general cost of living was eating into my ability to invest at the level I was accustomed to.... Now, I use geo-arbitrage to bring in US dollar bills, while living in low cost of living countries .. thereby having plenty left over to invest and grow my money.. as such, I expect to be able to retire 10 years sooner than if id stayed in the Divided States..... Im sure you'll have a problem with that though, your ilk always finds something to complain about .

I wouldn't call them a net negative, because that would mean they are more of a negative than all of the positive things I have in my life. I have a sister that is batshit liberal, and raised all her kids to be that way: homo, liberal, gluten free, heavily medicated wackjobs. It's good they live out of state in the midwest. They didn't even come down for Christmas after Trump won the last time because they couldn't stand coming to visit a red state after that. It didn't hurt any of our feelings honestly. They gave some bullshite story that it was too expensive to come down to visit every year, so they're going to come down every other year. Then posted pics after the holidays of their family vacation to Costa Rica between Christmas and New Years. I feel bad for my parents though.
