re: Is your family a net negative for your life?

Most of my family is fantastic and I enjoy their company. There are a few family members I have as little as possible to do with and I am certain I am probably that person for someone else.
My immediate family is a net positive for me and it ain't close. My wife is the foundation of everything that I am and my kids are the superstructure built on that foundation. My take on other people, family, friends and acquaintances is this - if they make me want to be a better person than I would be otherwise they are someone I appreciate and admire. And even love. If they aren't I can still be friends or cordial but I could care less what they think. My wife and kids constantly make me want to be better, to be worthy of their love and respect....and that is a net positive anyway you slice it.

Quite the opposite, and it is actually the reason I'm now considering moving back to Louisiana, despite many times saying on here I wouldn't move back. Now that my son is over a year old, my perspective on what is important in life has changed quite a bit. While Texas offers much more in the ways of salary, beneficial taxes, and certain qualities of life, the one thing I don't have here is extended family.
When I look back on my childhood the things that I looked most fondly on, are all related to family; whether it was my pawpaws taking my hunting/fishing when I wanted to go, my parents/grandparents/cousins attending my sporting events, family crawfish boils, tailgates, etc. All things I realize now I want my son to be able to enjoy as well.
Now my wife has a say as well, so I won't be moving willy nilly, I promised her if we move, I wouldn't jeopardize our current financial stability and in reality look to improve upon it.

Word of advice for the lurking: Never allow the women in your family to have too much information.
Yep x 100
They may mean well but most of them think that every idea they have is a great idea. By nature and profession I like to explore multiple options since the best option doesn't always immediately appear. Also many decisions are based on trade offs. The wife will latch onto the first idea that pops in to her head and consider that the best possible solution.

great grandmother, left Finland on a ship, to come to America to live with her brothers who had found work in the states.
She passed them in the night, on a ship going back to Finland, because they were coming back home. They never saw each other again.
And yet you can send a message, instantly, across the world.
Man, you really have it rough
This reminds me of the Louis CK bit about a fellow passenger being bummed out by the wi fi not working on the plane. After Louis goes on a rant about this he finishes it up by saying we have the most spoiled generation in history.

Carlin was clever but was clearly a pessimist.
I loved Carlins comedy for most of his career though by the end he became a bitter, pessimistic person. The wit and perfect delivery was overshadowed by his doom rants in his last years.

Some of my siblings yes, but I love them anyway despite their flaws. I set up healthy boundaries, but I’m not going to abandon them. They also teach me patience and kindness.

I really feel bad for anyone in that situation. My family is my life.

I'm close to my mother and brother and in contact with one aunt.
Other family on both my mother's and father's was a nightmare of delusional greed over inheritances.
I completely washed my hands of all of them over 20 years ago and have never regretted it for a second.
Friends are much more healthy.

Making ends meet' was never a problem for me.. that mentality tells me you are probably a paycheck-to-paycheck type person
Close…LOL…. I live in South Florida where the cost of living has always been higher than 98% of the country. I moved back in with my parents after graduating from LSU and saved my arse off. I even worked 2 full time jobs despite having no bills. That was MY way to assure I would never have to find a way to make ends meet. Bought my first house with a 15 year mortgage and paid an additional $250-350 a month so that the mortgage was paid off in just over 10 years. Put 3 kids through 15 years of private school and 4 years of college without ever borrowing a penny. I’ve never worried about paying a bill in my life, even when I got fired from my job the day before I bought my second house that cost twice what I was selling my first one for.
