World War 2 was the dividing line. After that everyone in the US could afford to be fat. Before 1945 it was almost all rich people who were fat.

At Kroger:

1 lb. fresh spinach - $0.99

13.5 oz. Popeye canned spinach - $1.59

I am far from wealthy, but I damn sure ain't fat either. It's not hard to eat healthy, and you don't need a bunch of fancy equipment to work out and get in shape.

Many people believe this and don't even try to adapt to a healthy lifestyle

They justify being overweight and lazy by thinking it'll be more expensive for them. Definitely a copout

Explain?

Leaner cuts of meat are more expensive (96% beef vs 75 or 80%)

Canned vegetables are cheaper than fresh vegetables

If you just cherry pick things like this you might conclude that it's expensive to eat healthy

But are leaner cuts of meat really that much more expensive? BTW canned Salmon or Tuna is relatively inexpensive and healthy so long as you don't eat to much to give yourself mercury poisoning.

Frozen veggies are cheap and taste better than canned are really just as good as fresh

Cashews also have a lot more calories than chips if I had to guess

I agree that an absurd proportion of poor people are fat. What a great country that even our poor are well fed.

But it doesn’t seem that wealthier people are all that thin either.

I challenge anyone to drive around Houston and find a dozen Mexican women over 25 who are thin. Unicorns.

Exactly

If you’re wealthy you’re eating good, therefore some rich lazy fricks are fat as frick

You people need to get out more.

100% bullshite. That may be what the industry is telling you, but that’s a lie.

It's more about drive.

For the most part, wealthy people are wealthy because they have the drive and discipline and that spills over to their health.

For the most part poor people are lazy. They eat lazy and don't exercise.

Well, that's not always true. And besides, you can spend alittle bit of money, buy some plants, plant a garden, and grow more, healthier vegetables for less than what you will spend in the store.

I spent $6 on 10 tomato plants. Gave 3 of them away, had another 2 die, and have still harvested over 20 lbs of tomatoes.

Go find a grocery store where you can buy 20 lbs of fresh tomatoes for $6. You probably couldn't even buy 20 lbs of canned tomatoes for $6.

I grew 11 lbs of green beans for maybe $2. I've picked 14 lbs of cucumbers that cost me $4.

Plus, gardening involves physical labor, which is good for you as opposed to being a fat lazy frick.

Are you saying that you believe most "Mexican women" are wealthy? What point are you trying to make?

No. It wasn't.

Data from the CDC shows that obesity began skyrocketing in the 80's.

People in the 60's and 70's were not fat. They really weren't fat in the 80's either. The rate of obese children held steady at about 5% until 1980. By 1987 or so it had reached 10%. It's about 21% now. This is a VERY recent phenomenon.

Two working parents often means more takeout/fast food. Also, the internet and electronics replaced a lot of time traditionally spent outdoors.

You may have a point

I’m squarely middle class, run a couple times a week, eats a salad a couple times a week, but I’m eating gummy bears right now.

If I had more money maybe I wouldn’t have bought the gummy bears.

And the inverse is true: If you hadn't have bought the gummy bears, you'd have more money.
