Is there ever anytime that renting a car to go on vacation is a good idea?

Other than if your truck breaks down. I know a couple who have 2 trips to go to Destin this summer and they are renting a vehicle both times. I asked him why they didn’t take one of theirs and he said, theirs weren’t reliable enough. I thought, why don’t you save some of that money and buy you a fricking vehicle you can drive down the highway.
ETA: besides if you need more room, or want to rent a convertible

renting for a few days is a lot cheaper than a new vehicle.

Round trip in a 17mpg 93 octane or round trip in a 40mpg 89 octane on a 1500 mile trip.
It was worth it that time

We rented a big van one time to take on vacation because we wanted more space

I've got a buddy that drives an old wrangler as his daily because it was his dad's and he loves it.
So for trips longer than a couple hours he rents a cheap sedan.
But yea, if someone just can't afford a new car and that's their reason for renting, then spending money on vacation AND a rental seems somewhat fiscally irresponsible.
That said, if I didn't already have a large vehicle for family trips, I would consider renting a van or something larger so my 3 kids wouldnt murder each other in a 5-seater.

Maybe if your vehicle doesn't have enough room?
You started this thread to post this?

lots of people will do this when they have leases on their main cars, keep the miles off.

Yes.
I wanted to cruise PCH1 in a convertible with prev Mrs Cars, so we did.
This was before the fires, and it was worth every penny.

I've got quite a few free days with one rental car company. Next month we are renting a minivan from MSY, spending two days in Pensacola, then driving to DIsney world and returning the car at the Dolphin resort. We will fly home where our vehicle is waiting for us at the airport.
#1 reason is I don't want to drive home from Disney world so I worked the extra expenses into the budget.

More than once I’ve rented a car and driven to New York. Stay in Manhattan a few days then fly out of LGA to go somewhere else. Usually because flights out of New York are cheaper and I get to enjoy spending a couple nights in the city.
But in that instance it’s a one-way rental.

We went to Gatlinburg for Mardi Gras and rented a Grand Cherokee.
My wife's car is too small for the family and all our luggage
I didn't want to put the miles on my truck. Plus the tonneau top isn't watertight enough to risk all of our luggage getting wet if it rains while driving.
Not sure why you'd have an issue with someone renting.

Yeah.
I drive a V8 F-150 work truck and my wife drives a Honda CRV.
We took our 3 kids from Shreveport to Miami in a rented SUV that had more room and got comparable gas mileage to her smaller SUV. It was worth it for a few hundred bucks.

So you saved about 65 gallons. Say gas was $4/ gal… you saved $260.
Bet you payed more to rent the car, therefore was not worth it.

Easy answer. If one drives a mileage restricted leased vehicle day to day. Use a rental so you don't bust your mileage limit and rack up a big end of lease penalty payment.

I don't really see the issue. Maybe the $300 is worth not worrying about the hassle of a breakdown on the way instead of a $45k purchase of a new vehicle.

I thought, why don't you do the math and give us a price comparison?

Back in the day, it was always cheaper for me to rent a car on road trips than put miles on and get less gas mileage in my truck.
With that said, that was back when I could rent a cheap economy that got 35mpg for like $20/day.
