You must be the exception. Every time I'm in NOLA it feels like I'm about to get robbed by some a-hole who uses this line.

I was there for work for about a month and noticed quite a few, but one of the guys I was working with said he had lived and worked all over SoCal and said SD was the worst hands down. It gets really bad the closer you get to the desert. Did some night work in El Cajon. Tweekers everywhere.
The home health agency I worked for was based in El Cajon and I can confirm this statement. Saw some real characters further down the interstate near the border. Real interesting place to be going into different homes.

Dunno man.....Santa Monica and downtown San Francisco are pretty bad...
Cali is infested with them
Yeah I was 28 when I was there. I remember a guy in Ocean beach asking me to spare some change for an old dude. I'm pretty sure he was two or three years younger than me.

True, you can definitely sense more chosen lifestyle and joy in many of the homeless in places like SoCal, SF, LV,etc..than I sense in many other cities.
Doesn't matter if many choose willingly in the current to self-sabotage, or made horrific choices in the past that currently have them buried in bad situations now.
That America is setting fire to ourselves, and rolling up massive debt, in absorbing outsiders en masse, when we've never rightfully dealt with Vets going back to Vietnam, and all the other homeless, and mentally ill, going back decades, is just wrong.

yup, San Diego is pretty bad.
i noticed a lot of them down at gaslamp, but they were much more friendly and understanding of me not having change than in a lot of other big cities. more of a "oh, no big deal man" than relentless badgering i've gotten in NOLA, Austin, NYC, or other places.

Bums? Why would we have so many bums since the economy is just fantastic.

Milwaukee. Obviously some but only in certain confined areas.

Probably in Alaska. I imagine all the homeless people freeze to death in the snow. And it's not like you can just hitchike or walk from the Canadian border to Alaska.
The homeless population increases exponentially during the summer months.
Then they disappear during the winter.
If the bums up here aren't native there's a good chance they are here being homeless to rebel against mommy and daddy who are probably making 6 figure salaries
They do their time as a poor person then return back home during the winter aND miraculously know better than you next time you being up poor people because of their new found perspective

SD is a relatively clean city.
Downtown/Gaslamp is disgusting and smells like piss. It has gotten worse the last 3yrs since Filner clipped the tent city idea

San Diego is bad, but Honolulu is the worse.
Family members will buy their homeless relatives one way tickets to get them out of the winter.

They've used the line on me several times, but they never followed me after I told them to frick off

Portland had to declare a state of emergency last fall due to the homeless problem.
Portland's homeless is at breaking point

I'm going to take a guess that there are white people from decent families without substance abuse problems or mental illness who are homeless in Portland

I took a friend to skid row to show him what it was like yesterday. You really can't believe it until you see it.
It is the highest concentration of homeless people in the country. LA in general has tent cities all over the place.. I don't know how anyone could say San Diego has more homeless people.
But skid row really takes the cake.

Damn. Who knew?
Seriously, we walk a fine line here in Portland. The bums know that if they start getting aggressive, public opinion will turn on them and the City Council won't be able to protect them any longer. They will be forced to clean up. That's why the bums in Portland aren't as aggressive as they are in other cities.
They are still an eyesore, though, and I think allowing them to stay is enabling their drug habits. We have groups who raise money for them and have cookouts, clothes drives, and other programs that make their life on the street a little more comfortable. I think a lot of those folks would seek out help and change their life around if they didn't enjoy their urban outdoorsman life so much.

Compared to other major cities, there really isn't a large homeless problem in Boston. Sure, there are some. But surprisingly not as many as you'd think for a large city.

You would be correct. Bunch of self-entitled brats. Went there a couple of years ago and got the stink-eye from a twenty-something year old "homeless" kid with Starbucks, an iPhone, and a Gary Fisher bike when I told him I didn't have any change. Otherwise, the city is really nice. That's the problem with nice places...they attract all kinds of people.
