Alaskans are my favorite people in the United States, maybe the world. But I spent almost no time in Anchorage which definitely has its share of crappy areas. But in the smaller towns and the bush the Alaskans are keeping the frontier spirit alive. Everybody is very self reliant and can hold down multiple jobs because often they have to. But I didn't read the Anchorage paper, instead I spent a couple of months actually seeing the state and meeting the people. Sure, they've got problems meth and alcoholism is a huge problem in the tribal areas but I ran into none of that.
Alaskans > Big City Residents all day long.
Sure, there are lots of good people in the Bush. There are also a lot of scofflaws, outlaws, and just plain trash.

Southeast Rocks, except for the politics. It's full of Bernie supporters.
Alaska is kind of like California in that you really can't pigeonhole residents. The 5 geographic areas are very very different.

San Antonio has tons.
The stairs down to the river always smelled like piss...
That place is pretty well cleaned up. It's 5 star restaurants, bars, and fancy hotels along the walk. There are some cheap trinket shops at street level, but I feel like all the scum is concentrated in the area by the Greyhound Station.

SoCal would make sense for a homeless person. It's the most hospitable outdoors climate in the nation.
Does Minneapolis have a lot of homeless people?

Salt Lake has almost none
In Phoenix there aren't many I saw this year
OKC isn't too bad, because they're all in a pile about 2 miles west of downtown.
Raleigh and Charlotte are low bum counts for their size/location.
Believe it or not, there are usually a few derelicts outside in northern Tier towns of Bismarck,
Billings, Fargo, even in the winter.

How is the bar situation in SD? Hookers and blow, or mainstream?

Heh, there's plenty of homeless and even more bums in Chicago. There's bums every street corner and every alley. I see drugged out crackheads at 8AM at Union Station every day. There are several times recently that I realized I was walking down the wrong alley and had to retreat.
I would say there is a difference between bums and homeless. There are 6-7 homeless who stay there every night. But they don't bother anyone, try to keep clean, don't panhandle, and mind their own business. Not too bad really.
Athens Ga was really bad. It sucked. I lived DT for 2 years and on a Sunday night, there'd be more homeless DT than not it seemed. It was the only city of any size for many counties so every homeless person around flocked to Athens for the services provided.

I think the question should be is there any other major developed country that allows the same level of homelessness? Been to a few big cities in Europe and you don't see it hardly ever.

Ugh, yeah, Eyropean cities have huge homeless populations. One of the creepiest things I've ever seen was two legless homeless men in loinclothes pulling themselves down the street in the rain in Munich.
The thing with European cities I believe is they will Atkanta it up and ship the homeless off for special events. I was in Madrid when they were bidding for the Olympics and they had banished all homeless people and when thy lost out, within days, there were thousands of homeless back in the city.

Last time I was there, I didn't notice any tweekers. I thought El Cajon was relatively nice.

Yep, winters can be brutal. Last year was nothing though. Plus, I'm not homeless so I have a place to stay warm - there's also that.
Not to mention the summers here are a nice trade off. I'm sitting outside in jeans and a button down right now and not even close to breaking a sweat.

They have the same group of bums that have been posted up on the corner of canal and city park ave in NOLA for almost a yr now. It pisses me off everytime I pass. One guy sits in a wheelchair and props his leg up but I've seen him walking just fine before. Same corner, for a yr!? They have to stay somewhere close bc it's everyday. Get a freaking job bum!! Can't the cops run them off?

This beautiful woman was killed by one of Austin's bums earlier this year. They're definitely a problem in here.
