Used to work with a guy from New Hampshire. He said that was the best part about harsh winters. Kept all the smelly bums away.
There are no big cities in New Hampshire.

The worst thing about Alaska is the Alaskans themselves, and it's not only limited to Anchorage. You've got thugs in the cities, and meth freaks and other assorted misfits in the rural areas. Marginal people tend to wash up at the edge of civilization, I guess.
Alaskans are my favorite people in the United States, maybe the world. But I spent almost no time in Anchorage which definitely has its share of crappy areas. But in the smaller towns and the bush the Alaskans are keeping the frontier spirit alive. Everybody is very self reliant and can hold down multiple jobs because often they have to. But I didn't read the Anchorage paper, instead I spent a couple of months actually seeing the state and meeting the people. Sure, they've got problems meth and alcoholism is a huge problem in the tribal areas but I ran into none of that.
Alaskans > Big City Residents all day long.

Compared to other major cities, there really isn't a large homeless problem in Boston. Sure, there are some. But surprisingly not as many as you'd think for a large city.
Chicago also actually isn't that bad for as large of a city as it is.
It is just far too cold here six or seven months a year to have a significant homeless population.
Compared to the other areas I've lived, it's probably the best, which isn't saying much. Seattle was the worst.

or they live in the subways.
This is true. I saw a weird program about it. It was an entire bum city living underground.

Every big city has them, it's just a matter of how visible they are.
I noticed it was horrible in downtowns of NOLA, Memphis, Louisville, Cleveland, St Louis, etc.
I think it's not as bad in cities with more urban sprawl. I don't think San Antonio is too bad. I didn't have any issues in downtown Phoenix either.

Basically all the cities that maintain an unofficial "skid row"

Salt Lake City is overflowing with homeless people. And every single business is hiring.

I actually thought it was no more than NYC in the touristy spots. The subway was fairly clean.

Ft. Worth downtown, the Basstapo runs their asses out of downtown.

funny I didn't think about FW, but you're right . . . place looks almost pristine compared to most downtowns

I had to stay late in downtown Ft. Worth to finish some late running depositions. Went out at night, no riff raff. They have a big movie place downtown that people actually go to (e.g. not some rundown porno theater where winos come in to sleep and beat off).
I asked the lawyer at the office where the depositions were held "why is this downtown so bum and vermin free?" The Bass family owns a lot of buildings downtown and they have their own security force (hence, the Basstapo) and they keep the riffraff out.

There are parts of Los Angeles that are an absolute nightmare. Skid row is something u have to see to believe. Hollywood is horrible also.
I took a friend to skid row to show him what it was like yesterday. You really can't believe it until you see it.
It is the highest concentration of homeless people in the country. LA in general has tent cities all over the place.. I don't know how anyone could say San Diego has more homeless people.
But skid row really takes the cake
I went to a town hall type meeting in downtown LA and the homeless issue was addressed. Im sure weather does play a factor in a cities homeless population, but more critical are local vagrancy laws. In LA for example, it's completely legal for someone to sleep on the street between certain hours, and IIRC the police aren't able to search a homeless person's tent. Additionally, there's a local chapter of the ACLU thats super gung-ho on preserving the rights of the homeless. These factors are what cause LA to be a homeless haven.

Dallas being larger and close naturally attracts them away from ft worth, too.
Dallas definitely has its share and ft worth's too.

Probably in Alaska. I imagine all the homeless people freeze to death in the snow. And it's not like you can just hitchike or walk from the Canadian border to Alaska.
Lots of homeless in Anchorage and Juneau.

As for Anchorage, you're right, it's a shithole. I read the Anchorage paper online, and rarely does a day go by without some act of violence that often ends in death. The worst thing about Alaska is the Alaskans themselves, and it's not only limited to Anchorage. You've got thugs in the cities, and meth freaks and other assorted misfits in the rural areas. Most of he homeless are native. They come from dry villages to Anchorage to drink. 4th street is a shite hole after dark.

If you have a lot of things for homeless people, you'll have a lot of homeless people. Temp shelters, soup kitchens, they'll show up.
