If you're a minority and a vet with no black marks on your record, you can probably count on the courtesy of a callback. Otherwise, as others mentioned, it may just be a waste of time. They generally have a candidate in mind for those jobs. That's just word of mouth. I never bothered.

Here is the secret:

In 99.999 percent of job postings, one of the following is true:

1) They already have the candidate picked out, but regulations require them to post the job. Whoever said "Rooney Rule" is 100 percent correct. The posting is an absolute farce.

2) There is no actual job at all... they are simply wanting to get resumes on hand so they have a pool to choose from in the event a position does open in the future. However, after so long, the resume pool becomes stale, so they have to throw it out.

Getting a job from fedgov is no different than anywhere else. Network, network, network.

I feel the same way about LA jobs. Though in my case they just cancel the position.

It’s a pain in the arse with my bs in Coastal Science. All the environmental science jobs are being scooped up by Env. engineers because Chem E’s are taking their jobs.

Depends on the position, I've tried to hire some highly specialized scientists & engineers and have had to list the positions multiple times. Other more routine jobs, I'll have my choice of multiple PhDs or years of great experience, so the avg applicant never even makes the list.

You have to look at the job posting and use similar terminology in your resume and profile stuff.

Go look at what is required of that series that you are applying for as well and specifically include classes that are mentioned in the requirements for that series.

The hardest part is getting past the initial HR screening...

it also helps if you are a minor, veteran, or former Federal employee.

Took me two years to get my job (no previous Federal experience and in a State I've never been too or have any contacts in)

This is about it. Most of the initial screening is done by a computer program. Make sure you hit the buzzwords in the vacancy announcement in your resume. Unless you are applying for a mass hire, i.e. Border Patrol, or something very specialized that you have the specialty, unless you are a veteran you are going to have a hard time.

That's government jobs? Most of those jobs they probably have filled already, but they HAVE to at least list it.

I have a relative that applied for a mete-Tech job with the national weather bureau. She was told that there was about 120 applicants for one particular opening ( GS -5/7). This was around 2005 though.

Like already mentioned, if you are applying and uploading a standard resume, you're screwed because it will not get through HR prescreen. Government resumes are different style and requirements.

My cousin has sent many resumes and applications. She is 37 years old and has a meteorology degree from south Alabama. She has applied for about 75 openings since her graduation in 2003. I told her that she should try to get into marine fisheries or accuweather in order to build experience and favor with the weather service. She is a white woman and is not a minority.

Get a master's in quantitative field...

That's what I did after getting the same degree...

Much more job opportunities with those two combos

There are key words in the job announcement that you need to written exactly the same way on your resume.

I’ve applied twice on USA Jobs. Got invited to interview both times. Turned them down the first time (right after my post-doc) as I’d already secured a job. Accepted the interview and the job the second time. FYI, I’m a straight white male. Perhaps you just need to be a better candidate.

Yep, I used to bang this slutty ex marine who works for the corps of engineers.

She said the same thing, took her 3 years to get a call.

I started reading this thread and felt I had to post because the first 8 or so threads could not be more misleading. I didn’t read the rest.

How long is your resume? In the private sector you are providing a resume to get an interview. On USAJOBS you are posting a resume to get a job. My first time applying I was offered the job on the first contact I had with the agency (contingent on getting security approval). Just carefully read the job description and the questions provided. Make sure your resume backs up your answers. Also remember that you are likely competing with hundreds of applicants, some of which are vets and will score higher.

It will take a few months most of the time for HR to go through the information and choose which applicants they will refer. Think quality instead of quantity when you post.
