It seems like I never get referred to a hiring agent and only get mailed back months to years after the fact stating the job is now closed. Is there some kind of trick or strange format for resumes that one needs to follow when compared to applying to literally any other job?

I used to work for the feds. When they post a position, they already have the candidate they want to hire. They just post the job for the illusion of transparency.

Simple minority doesn’t cut it these days.

But if you are an African American / Native American Eskimo Woman disabled veteran with Hispanic ancestors you are in.

Half of the jobs already have the person they are going to hire, but regulations require them to go through the process.

it took me a year or so to figure the system out.

You have to look at the job posting and use similar terminology in your resume and profile stuff.

Go look at what is required of that series that you are applying for as well and specifically include classes that are mentioned in the requirements for that series.

The hardest part is getting past the initial HR screening...

it also helps if you are a minor, veteran, or former Federal employee.

Took me two years to get my job (no previous Federal experience and in a State I've never been too or have any contacts in)

What job area are you looking for? If it is IT, unless you are a vet, you can pretty much forget about it.

Federal job candidates are given preference points for military vet, minority, disabled, etc. The more boxes you check/points you get, the better your chance of landing the job.

I am currently a contractor to fedgov. While I would love to move to an FTE position, I am in IT and any time an IT position opens to the outside world (most are filled internally) the number of recently separated military vets applying for the job is staggering - so they would have to go through a whole list of candidates before I would even get a wiff - even though I am currently doing the job and have my background check, etc. already done.

Most federal jobs are with contractors. Find a contractor and apply there directly.

Also lie like hell if they have you answer the surveys. Say you are the best at everything...

I bet that would be a hard job to land in the Federal circuit...law community is pretty tight knit and highly political.

Bet they already have people set for those positions

A federal resume is probably what you're missing. If you're using a standard resume, it's probably being skipped immediately.
