Is there a region more historically and culturally confusing than the Balkans?

I was listening to a podcast series earlier today about the Bosnian war in the 90s as I’m about as well versed as a kindergartner on that war.

Holy shite, what a clusterfrick of cultures and nationalities that took place in that war.

Imo, that war makes a good case against trying to force multiculturalism on people.

Balkans are a perfect example of diversity not being strength

As seen through the lens of American and global politics. The view was murky by intent.

multiculturalism

I don't think multiculturalism was enforced on anyone, in two cases a uniculture was forced on people.

First a notion South Slavism which would unite the various religious groups and then Communism which would unite all the cultural groups.

Unless we have a different definition of multiculturalism.

I’ve been to the Balkans a lot, and love the people.

That being said, place has been fricked since the Romans. It lost the global location lottery.

I wouldn’t say they were multicultural at all. The area was a bunch of different cultures but they were held together under a communist regime. The ethnicities were native to the area but not historically one country. When that fell apart, the different ethnic groups went to war to get what they felt was their rightful borders.

World War I started there... if you want to listen to a truly amazing podcast that features the Balkans, Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History is the best out there.

Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro are doing fine. The rest of the Balkans may as well be Mexico.
