You are more plugged in than I am, but from what I've read, big law firms aren't building their own AI models. They're building bespoke agents using wrappers like Harvey that integrate OpenAI/Anthropic models with Westlaw/LexisNexis and their own internal data (and spending easily 6-7 figures a year on them).

You are absolutely right and what he said was retarded

Exactly. The "just unplug it" crowd sounds like infants.

Every single day that goes by we are more deeply integrating AI into our utilities distribution, financial system, healthcare system, weapon systems, food production a distribution and countless other systems critical to our civilized existence.

Will we just unplug civilization? We are making AI indispensable.

I don’t know y’all, but maybe we’re going to look back at this moment and realize the guys in the know might have actually been telling the truth,

I sure as frick have never seen an industry where all the leaders say their products are probably going to kill us all, and to dismiss it confidently as a novel strategy kinda seems arrogant when we have no clue what’s going on as mere observers.

I don't trust AI, nor do I trust AI companies. I don't think having the opinion that having AI integrated in every facet of our lives is a overall bad thing for society is going to be a hot take in 20 years.

With that said, I also understand how corporations work, and the frontline companies clearly want regulations now in order to limit competition. This is a pretty standard playbook.

I am always suspicious of people in power when they start trying to scare people. Its always for control.

If the other opinion is to all die, yeah I would think so

Serious question, why wouldn’t we just unplug it? It needs electricity to run

Isn’t the danger of it “escaping” that it is no longer housed in the actual physical components of these companies but rather distributes itself across the internet and into the all computers that are connected?

If all the models are relatively dumber and decentralized LLMs that are diffused across the developed world, I’m not sure how that matters. The world is already on computers, so if an evil frontier model “escapes”, why do we care that simple or narrow AIs have proliferated?

We are so far away from that though. The processing and computing is done and only capable at a finite amount of locations.

I suppose that could be possible at some point, but still seems so unlikely. For example, the US would do everything in their power to prevent china’s AI to penetrate ours and vice versa so you’d have to have so many things happen

I think it’ll all move to some form of flat fees or other alternative arrangements. And I suspect a lot of older lawyers would rather just close up shop than change their business model of over 30-50 years.

We are far away from that, but if AI models get to be smarter than people, theoretically agents could figure out an alternative processing venue that people currently don’t think is feasible.

Logically, I think any AI-driven existential risk to humanity would not be a threat we are currently aware of. Less intelligent animals are not aware of all the means humans have to eliminate them. That would also apply to us with super intelligent AI, theoretically.

If my aunt had balls she’d be my uncle is kind of my whole point though

I get it, but AI isn’t constrained by biology, unlike your figurative aunt.

Yeah, it’s strained by the need for an energy source totally controlled by humans

My aunt can at least put on some jean shorts and have a fake deep voice and pretend to be my uncle

There really needs to be a breakthrough via robotics to get more “general” about the physical world.

Humans that can blackmailed or manipulated by a more intelligent agent, though.

I’m just playing devils advocate, for the record.
