If imagine with technology today, the days of the old long term serial killers is over with.
Don’t assume that criminals won’t adapt.
We will always have serial killers. They will always attempt to minimize their chances of not getting caught.

Plenty have been caught by their dna on straws/cig butts/drinkware. Some are just dumb and leave cell phone on, drop drivers license at scene, or Rx bottle.

That's in Zachary and no. This poor mom has trouble accepting the fact that her daughter was a drug addict and likely ran off and OD'd somewhere. She's been trying to pin it on this guy for a couple of years. The story makes no goddamn sense.
One of the women has a huge chest tat that screams what they call high risk lifestyle.
Why do you think people cared way more about Derrick Todd Lee than Sean Vincent Gillis? Because DTL was killing pretty, professional, family women.
If this is even serial killer related, which it probably isn’t.

why would they minimize their chance of NOT getting caught?

It is very hard to get away with the murder of someone you are connected to these days.
This is true, but it’s not really a DNA issue with connected persons per se. It’s more about how trivial it is to cross-check an alibi against surveillance footage, cell phone data, and so on. If you’re connected to someone, their DNA probably “should” be on you unless the location and connection doesn’t make sense (eg, strictly platonic friendship, but DNA found in… well, you can guess).
If anything I think it’s strangers that get wrecked by DNA evidence more often, because there’s no plausible deniability.
But yes, to your broader point, correct. It’s hard to get away with killing someone you know. Just too easy to get tripped up, and importantly the cops know to look for you. Most of the time someone gets away with it, it’s because the cops never knew who to investigate in the first place.

It might not be your stereotypical serial killer but there might be a few.

They can lift DNA off of the slightest touch these days and get a profile then use your kin folks DNA in any database to track you down.
True. But at least according to the Crime Junkies podcast they are seriously backed up so you’ll probably have a few years

Familial DNA led to the arrest of BTK
a number of old murder cases have been solved with familial DNA in the past several years...joseph deangelo was also found this way...he was known by a number of names before his identity was discovered...the original night stalker, the east area rapist, the golden state killer...

I disagree. It’s almost impossible now. They are not showing adaptability. Soon it will be impossible to get away with it.
